Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

In retrospect, Calliope Worthington’s life would have been much simpler if she had just heeded the age-old adage, “Don’t do the crime if you can’t do the time.” In her defense, Calliope was not stealing the pearl necklace. She was simply admiring it while she and her family waited out an unexpected thunderstorm in what seemed to be an abandoned mansion. Unfortunately for Calliope, the mansion’s owner, Ren Porter, doesn’t believe a word she says. Ren thinks Calliope was trying to abscond with the necklace, and he insists that she pay for her attempted theft. Forced into marrying Ren, Calliope can earn back one pearl for each of her new husband’s commands to which she submits. At first Calliope is determined to win back her freedom as quickly as possible, but the more time she spends with her enigmatically cranky husband, the more Calliope finds herself falling for him. Composed of equal measures of whimsical intrigue and scintillatingly sexy love scenes, and graced with an endearingly eccentric cast of characters, Bradley’s latest Beauty and the Beast–inspired romance is a triumph of wit and sensuality. --John Charles

More About the Author

Hi, my name is Celeste Bradley and I write "brain chocolate." That is, I write fun and sexy escapism is for hardworking women everywhere. We deserve a little man-candy, too!

Reviewers like to say I write about misfit heroines getting the man of their dreams. Maybe that's true, but don't we all feel like misfits sometimes? Even if the rest of the world thinks we have all our balls in the air, aren't we juggling like mad on the inside, desperately trying not to drop one?

I'm the kind of woman who never truly has a clean house (not all at once!), who can't seem to have Christmas projects finished by Dec 25, who is stunned by how fast weeds can take over a perfectly well-behaved garden, who is mystified by high-altitude baking rules, who doesn't quite get the kids to the dentist appointment on time...well, you get the picture. Rather than having all my ducklings in a row, I just try to make sure none of the rotten little rebels are playing in the middle of the street!

I love this manic, scattered life I lead. I love to write, craft, garden, bake and mother, even if I don't always do it all perfectly. I love living in the Southwest, with its big sky and vast desert views. I love venturing out of my quiet life to meet readers and other writers, and then I love to come back to my haven, full of ideas and renewed passion and creativity.

Maybe one of those times I'll meet you!

Hugs,
and thanks for reading!

Celeste

This story held some good surprises.

Yes, the sex is a bit on the kinky side and a little brow-raising at times but nothing too crazy.

I usually love Celeste Bradley's books and was seriously looking forward to reading about what became of Ren which made the execution of this book extra painful. If your only criteria for romance is the number and intensity of the bedroom scenes then I guess I can understand the number of five stars this book has gotten but that's about it.

The hero and heroine aren't too bad but as has been stated before her family is beyond aggravating and I will be skipping the entirety of this series as it centers around the heroine's crazy (not in a good way) family. I realize that Celeste probably thought transporting a modern day hippy family back in time and making a series about their children was going to be funny but it is painful to watch their self-centered and airhead antics. Not a single one, save the heroine, had any redeeming qualities. Yes, they were all loyal to their other family members (no matter how wrong or psychotic the family member was) but it is consistently at the expense of everyone else around them, including the hero, and I found myself wanting to strangle them because they we're were so cruel and nonchalant about their cruelty and it's effects on others.

Long and short, if sex is all you need to label a romance as "good", there is plenty of that. If you enjoy the characterizations and plots in romance, move along, there is nothing to see here that won't have you feeling angry and bemused by the end of the book

I gave this book 4 stars because it is pretttty hot.

I would say that the author was probably influenced by the 50 Shades of Grey fervor going around but I haven't read any of her other novels so maybe she's just interested in some sexual control games. Whatever, it is, it was pretty sexy, much more so than 50 Shades I though. Also, Bradley can actually write unlike E.L. Jakes so that made it more enjoyable as well.

The heroine's family is annoying and there were some weak plot points but overall, the love story and the sex scenes were good. I would read this again and I look forward to trying out her other works.

I liked the hero and the heroine. The heroine was unique and I thought her family was a nice addition to add humor to the story. I would recommend this book to women who like sex in their books. There was an excess amount of sex for me. Repeated too much.

Not knowing which is more damaged his face or his heart, Ren Porter decided to collapse inward and never come back out. The unexpected ray of sunshine the blinded him to hope was this slip of a woman named Calliope. She literally stole into his home and the temptation to keep her there now included marriage.

Ren never expected the primal desire he felt for Callie but here he was overcome with a passion to protect her. Too many coincidences create the belief that mischief was being created not imagined. Callie pushes him to reach the heights he long ago abandoned showing him every day how beautiful she was and every night how passionate.

Callie has enthralled the town, bewitched her husband, and created a home where there was once an empty shell. Ren shows her the delights of the marriage bed and rewards her with more than any jewel she could ever wear around her neck. Callie believes that they are bound together now and will forever be the cure for whatever shall befall them.

A story of love and romance mixed with murder and mayhem is the masterful combination only Celeste Bradley can create flawlessly!

This book was not at all what I expected. I was expecting the typical B&TB type of love strory. I have to admit that I was very pleasantly surprised. The scenes between the H&h were well written (although sometimes the H could be a little selfish and condescending) and the love scenes as well. It was a pleasant departure from the loves scenes I am used to from historical romances. I would recommend this book to a friend.

Happy Reading :)

This is the best book Celeste Bradley has ever written. I have always enjoyed her writing, but this one was definitely her best. The heroines family was hilarious and crazy. Callie was smart, lovable with such a giving heart. Rens tortured soul desperately needed her love and loyalty. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would love to see Celeste Bradley give each of callies siblings their own story.

My rating is actually 3.5 to 4 stars because I almost loved this book. My friend recommened it to me because of the super hot scenes, the humorous loveable heroine and the damaged faced brooding hero. This is a 'romance writer gone wild' book. I read a lot of erotica so the love scenes were scorching but really tame to what I'm used to.

I loved Callie, I loved Ren, I loved the intense love scenes, I even enjoyed the eclectic mash up of secondary characters and her 'A Series of Unfortunate Events' type, over the top family.

What I didn't like was the last 15-20 % of the book. I found the direction it went tedious and unnecessary. Really two-three major things happen that served no purpose but to drag this story into the ground. Ms. Bradley went from doing something different and unexpected to throwing in every historical romance novel cliché in a way that severed my emotional connection to the characters and the book. I hate that I had to end the book with such a sour taste in my mouth.

Overall memorable and enjoyable just know that if you are anything like me, it may fizzle out at the end for you.
