More About the Author

I am a storyteller. I like to use humor and suspense to put a "human face" on life's struggles. The characters that I develop in my books live next door. There are the people struggling to forgive others and themselves. Then there are the power brokers that fear not being in control. The married man or woman that live in constant fear that their sexual secrets will be revealed. Racism and bigotry are portrayed by colorful characters. "I laughed and cried at the same time." "I couldn't put the book down." These and other reviews of my writings have given me the greatest satisfaction.

As an Episcopal priest for the past forty years I've served some of the largest congregations in our Church. It has been my privilege to have many notable citizens in my congregations. These have included former President and Mrs. George H. W. Bush and their families. Secretary of State James Baker. The infamous baby doctor Benjamin Spock. Secretary of Education Richard Riley and Supreme Court nominee Clement Haynsworth.

The author addresses honestly and openly situations that are much more common than most people realize.
Nancy E. Brown
Maynard's work is groundbreaking and should be a topic of discussion whenever you meet with people who work as we do in churches, schools and non-profits.
Noel Jones, AAGO
His book should be read by the governing boards of every church in America, and anyone who cares about the future of their church.

Understanding how good people doing excellent work can find themselves jobless....and how to prevent this from happening to you. Something we all need to know more about.

Let's say you take over a parish, a church, a non-profit group or, as in my case, a music program at a church. Under your guidance it begins to grow and begins to attract more and more attention. Your work begins to get noticed and word gets out more and more that this is the place to go to, as in my case, hear great church music sung as it should be. The growth of your work increases the financial income of the church through people transferring their memberships to be part of your program. Possibly a news article appears or a blogger posts a favorable description of your work.

Then you find yourself fired. Often suddenly and without notice. It happened to me. Not only did you not do anything wrong, you did everything right.

If you are like me, you spend the next few months wondering what happened. And might even find it hard to even get interviews for a new job.

You experience frustration along with all the people who loved your work and worked with you. It becomes general knowledge that just a few people were behind your removal, a tiny minority of the membership. And you did nothing wrong, instead, you did everything right.

In my case, I eventually got hired on for a three month period to replace a musician who left during the school year. And, to my surprise, over just three months I saw the same key things popping up that I had seen before. Interesting.

Since then I have thought about this more and more and felt the frustration of not being able to understand why this was happening.

Then I read When Sheep Attack by Dennis Maynard.

I only wish that we had found this book a year ago (I know, it had not been published). This seems to describe exactly what happened in our church. Fabulous rector, attacked by small but wealthy group of parishioners. She has her last service this Sunday, requested by our Bishop to resign. Her supporters: most of the parish, but worried about making the situation worse, so said little or nothing. Heart breaking.

We have had workshops. We have had a reconciliation process. We have bent backwards to try to avoid disaster. Buy the book now, and be prepared.

If you are a member of the Episcopal church, I would say everything goes double! READ IT!!!!

Dennis Maynard draws on his extensive experience as a pastor and particularly as an interim pastor who has guided many hurting parishes through transition after a former pastor was removed or resigned from ministry of those parishes. It is a fact of life that there are those in many, if not most, parishes who, through their own needs to control everything, work to destroy the ministries of good pastors. An interesting fact in all of the case studies that Maynard cites is that the pastors who were run off were at the time the attacks began, leading their churches through significant numerical and spiritual growth. If a church is moribund, there is a reason - there are people in that church who have a vested interest in keeping that church moribund. If a church that has been moribund begins to grow, the interests of those who have been keeping the church moribund are threatened. I have personally witnessed this many times, and have friends whose ministries have been destroyed in the process. It is diabolical. Because this phenomenon is so common, I recommend that all pastors, especially those entering into a new pastoral relationship, read this book carefully. All lay leaders who wish to support and protect the ministries of their pastors should also read the book.

Most every pastor I know has, like me, struggled from time to time with difficult members. Some have even left the church because life got so difficult. When Sheep Attack! does a great job explaining the dynamics and tactics of "antagonist sheep" and how to manage them. I wish I would have had this resource sooner! Loved that Amazon not only had the book, but had it at a good price and delivered it pronto!

If ever a book needed to be written, "When Sheep Attack!" is it. This insightful book takes a clear-eyed look at the aftermath of a church becoming unduly influenced by of a handful of hate-mongers. Maynard shines a light on the devastating and long-term effects of allowing a viciously vocal minority to dominate church affairs. His book should be read by the governing boards of every church in America, and anyone who cares about the future of their church.

A colleague who posts on the Pipe Organ List Server (PIPORG-L) posted a small squib about this book to the list members. At first glance, it didn't seem appropriate to us organists, choir directors, and organbuilders...

But, that little voice in my ear said "Buy the book, girl. NOW!"

So I sent some of my hard earned cash to Amazon and the book arrived today. I am most of the way through it, and have discovered that the Butler really did do it...

Darn. Wrong book...

Seriously, this book assuaged my distress over events of the last 5 years or so when it seemed I was losing tuning contracts for no discernable reason. You know. You have tuned the Gargantuous Organ in First Church of Scientists, Christ! since before God was born, have never had complaints before, and are now being barraged with complaints. Then, suddenly you are called before the Board of Deacons. told in no uncertain terms how lousy your work is, and summarily dismissed... And you drive home in a fog wondering what the hey just happened...

You have just been successfully attacked and vanquished by what Dr. Maynard terms "The Antagonists". Indeed a frightening prospect. I have had it happen to me more than once.

And it seems to me that this phenomena is not limited to churches, either.

I think that if you have anything to do with spiritually-oriented eleemosinary institutions in any capacity whatsoever, you will find that the $15.00 (plus shipping & handling) may save your sanity, not to mention your self-esteem. Not to even think of your JOB!

Go buy the book!

Olivia
