Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This book of meditations by father-and-son team of Martin and Micah Marty reflects on the spiritual dimension of the gift of simplicity. Martin Marty, professor of modern Christianity at the University of Chicago, provides the devotional commentary for Micah Marty's stark black-and-white photographs. The elder Marty notes, "the gift of simplicity is there for the opening, the way we open books." According to Marty, the gift of simplicity purifies, and this purification occurs when prayers are said and answered, and when those who pray rise again to explore the fullness of life. Martin Marty provides insightful and thought-provoking devotions for those serious about discovering the spiritual meaning of simplicity, and Micah's photos of various rooms in a variety of locations draw the reader into a search for simplicity in the midst of a life's business.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is balm for the soul., September 11, 1998

This review is from: When True Simplicity Is Gained (Paperback)
True pleasure is gained by perusing the pages of this book. The photography is stunningly beautiful. The bible verse and devotion attached to each photo reflect and enhance the images and the interplay between them resonante in the heart. The author is a world-famous theologian and his prose shows a sure hand, is clear and illuminating. The shaker motif reminds us of that still, quiet place in which God speaks. This book would make an excellent gift, but don't forget to get one for yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful inside and out, February 7, 2003

This review is from: When True Simplicity Is Gained (Paperback)
Form combines beautifully with spirit in this lovely little book. Black and white photographs of Shaker interiors are paired thematically with prayers from Martin Luther, St. Teresa of Avila, and more. There is also a reference to a scripture verese at the conclusion of each prayer. The combination of these beautiful images, words and verse is perfect for contemplation or a daily devotional.
