Book Description

Restless and neglected Isobel is suffocating in a stagnant marriage. Suave and charismatic Jay is fighting for survival. When Jay rescues Isobel from a Marrakech mob, both sense opportunity, and an invitation from Jay to visit his resort in the hills of Tuscany sparks Isobel to imagine a life of freedom and excitement. This "Prequel" version is a stand alone short story, but also a trailer and teaser for the upcoming full release, in which Isobel pursues Jay to Tuscany, where her imaginings of a cinematic love affair crash into a nightmare of intrigue, deception and betrayal.
'When the Siren Calls - Prequel' is a smart, sensual, romantic drama with the suspense of a Grisham thriller, where there are twists to keep you guessing, and surprises at every turn. The story cleverly intertwines a love triangle with a fascinating sub-plot of business intrigue, as the headstrong heroine goes from one reckless action to another. This is a must read for those who like well-written, upmarket suspense, around complex adult relationships, with generous dollops of dry humour that amuse as well as delight.

"Tom Barry has a strong sense of irony and a nose for unearthing what
lies beneath the civilised facades we present to the world. It’'s
exciting to find a new writer who tells life like it is, but with a
delectable twist of romance, sex and humour." -
Stephanie J Hale, author, 'Millionaire Women, Millionaire You.')

The story drips with sexual tension, teasing you along with the promise of more to come. This is a book about craving and desire and the narrative has that in abundance..." - manicsurrealist
"Truly excellent writing and this is clearly a winning example of the genre: sultry and dangerous. The pacing is great - a rollercoaster ride from the beginning, as the neglected Isobel goes from one reckless moment to another." -  smj
"The setting is vivid and alive. I could smell the mint tea and the bazaar spices and feel the oppressive sellers." - AlexMMartin
"It captured my attention immediately and kept me interested."  - rayfs
"It flows easily. Attractive, lonely, neglected married woman discovers her own slumbering sexuality and finds it almost insatiable." -   ROSS4
"The characters come across as real people with hopes and desires." - greenman
"A nicely styleised and provocative piece of writing, well paced with intelligently drawn characters and an excellent setting." - pdepaor
"I became totally engrossed in the story from the start. The build-up of tension is well-paced and very real - my adrenaline flowed. This is likely not the book to read last thing at night if one has insomnia." - Rita
"This was fantastic. The pace was fabulous," - Chhimi10
"There's a hint of menace and danger from the opening page. The author then skilfully toys with your expectations." - sjh
"A finely crafted piece of work. The pace was just right and had me right there in the souk with its graphic description." - jaebell

From the Author

Fiction readers want to be transported to times, places and events where they can lose themselves in stories about heroes they can identify with, who triumph against the odds and who change and grow in the process; but most of all readers want to be entertained. In When the Siren Calls I created a character who embodied the skills of persuasion, but uses them in a manipulative way. I coupled this with my knowledge of Tuscany and the overseas property industry to weave intrigue and deception around a passionate, cathartic love affair between two driven people - Isobel and Jay. The result, I hope, is a unique and moving emotional drama that really does combine business with pleasure.
Everyone can relate to the central theme, a woman's struggle to live a life that is true to herself, not the one that others expect of her, but this theme is developed in a way that raises fundamental moral issues, because we see her actions, and their consequences, from multiple points of view, rather than a typical "women's issues" type perspective.

5.0 out of 5 stars A tantalising taste March 8, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A prequel -- what an excellent way to whet the appetite of readers before the book is released. Titilation is what I call it. Titilation of the marketing kind about a story that promises to titilate the senses. A sexually-unfulfilled wife in a tricky situation and a handsome stranger coming to her rescue in exotic, dangerous Marrakech. What more could you want to escape the global problems we're faced with every day in the media. Give me good old escapism any time. I'm looking forward to the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read August 22, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This is
a high octane suspense story and a roller coaster of a ride as the headstrong heroine goes from one crisis to another. And a dashing stranger to lead her into mischief. Think Lady Chatterley meets Christian Grey. Or Audrey Hepburn meets Gordon Gekko. But this is no romantic comedy. It is high tension and suspense from the opening line, with innocence thrown amongst the devious. The characters are real and believable, i was really sucked in, rooting for Isobel from the start. Somewhat surprisingly, the author brings the characters and scenes to life, while leaving much to the imagination. We learn more as we move along, with backstory cleverly drip fed on a need to know basis. By the time the author tells us what we need to know about the characters, we care enough to want to know. Sexual tension lurks on every page but there are real moments of humour, and some great one liners.

4.0 out of 5 stars When you don't get what you need July 27, 2013
By TINA
Format:Kindle Edition
When the wife doesn't get what she needs, she will look elsewhere. Isobel is neglected by her workaholic husband. He takes her to exotic places and leaves her to her own devices. She then meets Jay... This prequel is the carrot, it makes you want more and I cannot wait to read the entire book!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Call of Excellence November 19, 2012
By Figbee
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Tom Barry's novel, "When the Siren Calls" overflows with words and phrases that paint intense pictures of his scenes. The ability to carry a reader forward into the plot is an art, and he has done it with skill. The woman, Isobel, (the "Siren"), craves the relationships she knows her own husband cannot...or will not give her. The reader is driven as she is driven to find the mix of attention and romance that make up her psyche.
When this "Siren calls," sex and intrigue are drawn together in a novel of excellence. Recommended!

About T.J. Barry

When the pen is your sword

A published writer at University, TJ Barry spent 20 years in management consultancy with Accenture, Deloitte, and PwC, advising the Boards of leading global brands such as Apple, Disney, Toyota and Vodafone. Tj's career prompted a specific interest in the art of persuasive communication. TJ is passionate about nurturing young talent and has supported a number of UK and overseas schools, including the Nordoff Robbins Centre for Music Therapy. When the Siren Calls, is set in Tuscany and is both a sensual emotional drama and a page turning thriller.

Five things about me...

- one of eight kids, lifestory is the classic immigrant tale of seeking to live up to parental expectations, while working to mark out your own trail.
- I have aspects of an obsessive personality, establishing a work-life balance was a major challenge
- I gave up on my business career in my mid-forties, I just didn't tell my boss! Find something you enjoy doing, and you'll never work another day.
- I tell my kids education is the best gift I can give them, it's no weight to carry and no-one can take it off you.
- I believe almost everyone has an agenda; explore perspectives outside the mainstream, and beware suppliers bearing gifts.

From consultant to author

You become a writer because you think you've got something to say worth listening to. I chose to be a novelist because I want to entertain my readers, not preach to them. The challenge is to transport readers to times, places and events where they can lose themselves in stories about heroes they can identify with, who triumph against the odds and who change and grow in the process; but most of all readers want to enjoy the ride. "Back in my consulting days, it was a great buzz to work for household name companies and to meet industry icons like Bill Gates. Not many careers offer that opportunity to you when you are in your twenties and thirties. But like your first born, few things beat the thrill of holding your debut novel in your hand."

When the Siren Calls

TJ's first novel, "When the Siren Calls", is Book One in the Siren Calls trilogy. It is the story of two driven characters -Isobel and Jay - and their passionate and cathartic affair. Isobel's struggle is to live a life true to herself, not the one others expect. It pits the naive against the machiavellian, and asks searching questions about what life and money can do to love.

You don't start a novel with messages in mind, they just surface from the writing process. Established authors like Tom Fletcher, Alana Siegel and Matthew Branton, who read earlier drafts, tell me some of the talking points the story raised for them was :

- when a woman with high ideals falls in love with a man with low morals, she better watch out
- wealth and boredom can lead to a search for the exotic and a descent into decadence
- can infidelity be justified? Is it better to leave a devoted husband or waste a life?
- you reap what you sow. (Your sins will find you out.)
- dreams of living and retiring overseas often turn into nightmares, beware the siren call of the expat life and a home in the sun

TJ is married with three kids and lives in London and San Diego.
