5.0 out of 5 stars Great!
The guy below must be a Limp Bizkit fan, 'cause he doesn't seem to realize that When the Sky Turns Black... is one of the best (and least known) Death Metal albums to come out of the 90's. Crazy melodies nice vocals, tight drumming, and killer guitar tone. Definitely great. The instrumental Violent Generation is jaw-dropping. LONG LIVE TRUE EVIL!

On Brutality's 2nd disc, it's a case of deja-vu. Haven't I heard this riff before? Haven't I heard his voice before? Haven't I heard this song before? Alas, the answer to all theses questions are yes. Brutality churns out samey death metal that goes absolutely nowhere. The singer sounds EXACTLY like the other bad death metal singers (you know who they are), and the...

5.0 out of 5 stars If you don't like "Brutality" then you're lost forever!!!!!!, July 5, 2004
First off it's apparent that most of the people who are commenting about this cd and band know nothing of true musical talent, death metal or music bottom line. This is a great band and great album just as all three of Brutality's albums are. It's a shame that they haven't made a fourth album ( here's hoping). Brutality is one of the great death metal groups of all time! I urge any true metal head to buy all three of there musical efforts. For those of you that don't like Brutality go listen to some soft easy listening crap and get out of our hair! STAY BRUTAL TRUE METAL HEADS EVERY WHERE!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pay no attention to that above 1 star, May 30, 1999

This Cd is awesome, obviously the above guy likes Korn and doesn't know where true talent lies. Death Metal lives on and so does this album. This album has awesome riffs and the drumming is awesome with flowing double kick that bursts on and off. This like all the other brutality's is great Death Metal.

4.0 out of 5 stars Without a doubt, BRUTALITY's finest effort., November 27, 2000
'When the Sky Turns Black' isn't really a landmark in Death Metal history or anything, but it's my pick as BRUTALITY's best album ever. The vocals on here are the most extreme of all the BRUTALITY albums, the lyrics are excellent, the guitar work is unique, the blasting drumming is superb... what else can i say? This is great Old School Death Metal! There are 10 songs on here and i don't like 2 of them so my 4 out of 5 rating is accurate. If there's only one BRUTALITY album you buy, i would recommend 'W.t.S.T.B.' over 'Screams of Anguish' { Which isn't bad either, but not quite as fast or well produced } and * DEFINITELY * over 'In Mourning' { Just about the worst Death Metal album I've ever heard, and a truly huge dissapointment for me, considering what greatness BRUTALITY had achieved earlier }.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT OLD SCHOOL DEATH METAL!, January 27, 2011

This review is from: When the Sky Turns Black (Audio CD)
Honestly I liked this album a bit more than their debut album due to the darker tone and matured musicianship. It includes a cover of Black Sabbath's "Electric Funeral" which I found tasteful and brutal while still maintaining the "doomier" tone of the original.

These guys were very underrated and deserve to share the spotlight with more well known Death Metal bands. Highly recommended if you like solid quasi-tech death metal without the over-hyped guitar wanking of modern era tech death bands.

The singer sounds EXACTLY like the other bad death metal singers (you know who they are), and the band does absolutely nothing to distinguish themselves. They even go the obligatory Black Sabbath cover song route and fail miserably. About the only thing worthwhile here is the production and the instrumental pieces because you won't have to keep hearing Scott Reigel's voice for them. Attempts at melody and hook writing falls flat on its face. The whole disc went by and I swear that only 1 song played. It is a shame, though because there is SOME talent on hand here, and probably with some toning down and maturity, Brutality might have a future. I haven't heard their follow up ("In Mourning"), so the chance that they got better might be there. I doubt it though. There are much better things to blow $14 bucks on. Make sure it's not on this.

2.0 out of 5 stars dull., July 1, 1999

This is like really boring death metal. They don't do nothing different like Morbid Angel and Hypocrisy. They seem to play with no feeling and the songs all sonund the same. Better than Cannibal Corpse, but not by much. So-so.
