Biography

As early exponents of horrorcore, Three 6 Mafia have been accused of relating their name to the number of the beast, though the accusation of Satan-worship is something that band members have always disputed.

American hip-hop group Three 6 Mafia were formed in 1991 by DJ Paul, Lord Infamous and Juicy J, later joined by Koopsta Knicca, Gangsta Boo and Crunchy Black.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, June 18, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: When the Smoke Clears (Audio CD)
This is a pretty solid album, not near as good as "the End" or "world Domination" those are classics(my 2 favorite rap cds ever), , and also the prophet posse cd is a must, so get those first, and if you like undergroung stuff get mystic styles, thats back when they were very wicked with there old devil whorshipping style. Anyway! i love 3-6 and this cd is better then anything they have done in a while, favorite tracks are, 44 killers(short but good, nice sample from pastor troy, but wheres Koop?)Sippin on some syrup(i love ugk, but only paul and juice from the mafia)weak ass bith is solid, jus like us is great, Lord infamous has a great verse,i believe this is a diss twards playa fly( a slept on rapper from memphis who use to be down with 666)barrin you bitches-great song with some cool scratches, sounds like a skinny pimp dis, paul uses his verse-"silent night, deadly night......" "mafia ni**as- only problem is its got "Yea Hoe" in the background being yelled out throughout the whole song, MEMPHIS is the clique song which are always tight, but not as good as bodyparts pt.1 or pt2,the song with icp is tight as well as put ya sighns up, who run it is old, and the song with fiend is good, but most of the songs are pretty solid, not enough Koopsta though, he left the 666 and went with tommy wright for a while, back came back, thats why hes not on that many songs, also i wish Lord Infamous(who is the best in the group) wouldnt use his horsed vioce all the time, and mabey even toung twist a little more(get "the End" to see what i meen) and gangsta boo has fallin off ever since world Domination(i miss the devils Daughter) as for crunchy blac, i have mix feelings. When all is said and done, get this cd, its good.

5.0 out of 5 stars They still doin it, March 12, 2006
This review is from: When the Smoke Clears (Audio CD)
This is a classic. This is just great music. Three 6 may not have the best lyrics, but the beats are crazy, and their chemistry is outstanding. They have a way of making semi-wack rappers sound good. Every body on the album sounds great no matter how bad they really are. The have been the best underground group for a long time, and now they have an Oscar? They must be pretty damn good. If you don't believe me, cop this album. Its even the the songs they make now.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent masterpiece in its own sense, January 7, 2003

firebird_fury (San Antonio, TX) - See all my reviews
This review is from: When the Smoke Clears (Audio CD)
Before I start off, Three 6 Mafia is not for the faint of heart. Like many other reviewers have said, the Three 6 Mafia has established their name through their truly explicit lyrics. They use their right to speech to the fullest amount.

Now this album is in my opinion one of the best if not the best. I am a true hardcore Three 6 fan and I have heard and possess all their underground stuff. In that respect you cannot compare their underground stuff to this album. They are in essence two quite distinct sounds. Yet what remains is the fact that their style has not changed to this point. You will still find the roots of their old undergound stuff in this album. If you cannot hear it then you need to hear their underground stuff again. When The Smoke Clears is an album of a new emergence. Given that the material on the new album is slightly geared to a more widespread audience, it still is Three 6. The reality remains that many people still do not know who Three 6 Mafia is so in that repsect I still say that Three 6 is not commercial by any means. If you want a commercial sound go listen to Ja Rule or even better, Puff Daddy. Nothing against them but they are not true artists in my sense. Sure this album went platinum, but they did it using the same ingredients they did with other albums. They essentially will always be the same, no matter how many platinums sold.

Now on to the music: 3) Sippin On Some Syrup is my favorite jam(no suprise). This song keeps my head nodding foever and is in my opinion the best track. This was a good track to start with. Good beats and use of guitar. 4) The beat continues with Weak A** B****. This track makes you keep reiterating the chorus and again good use of the 808, it is a solid track. 5) Jus Like Us is a decent track and takes a little getting used to. 6) I'm So Hi was a track that I was dissapointed with. The track was too out or order with the opening songs and the chorus was annoying. 7) Mafia Ni**** was another good track to bounce back from the previous track. This track was decent and got the job done. I liked the constant echoing of "Mafia!!!". 9) From Da Back was another decent track kind of annoying. But I think at this point the CD picks up. 10)& 11) F**k All Ya'll Hoes and Where Da Cheese At are both very good tracks. The CD was slowing down but with these track again I found my head bumping to the beats. Both with very solid beats with good hooks and sync beats. 12), 13) & 14) These tracks were decent at best, but still listenable. I often found myself skipping through these tracks because they just did not sound that good. These are the last tracks that are decent, from this point out the rest of the songs are very good. 15) Act Like You Know'em was a good track that features Big Gipp of the Goodie Mobb. This track definately got my head noddin and the chorus is very tempting to repeat to yourself. Good beat, solid chorus, good raps make this song a favorite. 16) Take A Bump was probably my second most liked track. Though the song was short I found myself repeating this one. It has a different approach to the beat and Lord Infamous rips off on this one. 17) Touched Wit It is a nice jam featuring Fiend. At first it took me a while to get used to the beat, but after awhile I really began to like it. Of course La Chat delivers well on this one. Again a dissimilar approach to the beat, but nontheless very good. Only thing I still cannot like to this day is Fiend's "barking" in the song. 18) M.E.M.P.H.I.S. is just straight up banging. No words for this one. The song features the entire posse. 19) Just Anotha Crazy Click is a ode to their old grimy, hardcore sound. A very good track with a feature from ICP. This was quite the tag-team on this track and it worked out great. 20) Who Run It is probably rivaled to my second most liked track and it is just like M.E.M.P.H.I.S., straight up banging. All the emcees give good raps in this one. 21) The last track Put Ya Signs Up is a solid exit track and again has you repeating the chrous. A very complete ending for this CD.

All in all this CD is a CD in its own. If you would have, a new emergence of a new Three 6 Mafia that is going nowhere except to the top. I like it and strongly recommend it to anyone. If you are a hardcore Three 6 Mafia fan you should already have it.
