Editorial Reviews

Review

"When Someone You Love No Longer Remembers hits the need for comfort that every caregiver needs. Having cared for my elderly mom for over eight years, and a daughter with a mental illness at the same time, I know first-hand that exhaustion, loneliness, and depression are very real enemies for caregivers. Cecil's new book is a cup of cold water to the weary."
Virelle Kidder

"You will be hard pressed to make it through the two dozen vignettes in this book without tears forming in your eyes. Those who have walked this difficult road will recognize themselves and find comfort as they learn from others' struggles. Those who haven't are likely to find compassion welling up in their hearts for people walking through this valley. Cecil Murphey is a best-selling author because of his sensitivity, creativity, and teacher-heart. When Someone You Love No Longer Cares will strengthen his reputation as a master of storytelling and instruction."
Ken Walker, co-author of Winning the Food Fight

"Once again, Cecil Murphey has created a beautiful gift book entitled When Someone You Love No Longer Remembers. His brief stories, prayers, practical advice, and encouragement for caregivers would be a comforting gift book for those who are taking care of loved ones who can no longer remember. The book is also beautifully illustrated. I recommend this book to caregivers."
Dr. Carolyn Driver, professor, Beulah Heights University

"With firm yet compassionate words, author Cecil Murphey comes alongside caregivers to offer empathy, understanding, and advice borne of experience. When Someone You Love No Longer Remembers presents a treasure chest of caregiver wisdom. Tender illustrations, true stories, and real-life examples end in the aphorisms that have become Murphey's trademark."

More About the Author

Hello! My name is Cecil Murphey, but everyone just calls me 'Cec.'

I've written dozens of books on a variety of topics with an emphasis on Spiritual Growth, Christian Living, Caregiving, and Recovery. In these books, I share my personal experiences as I strive to be closer to God and to seek his will for me.

My passion is to stimulate people's minds and nourish their souls. Since 1984, I've used my writing to help me accomplish those goals. My first book came off the press in 1975. To date I've published more than 135 books and hundreds of articles.

When I write, I have the opportunity to share my faith and my spiritual growth with others. My nonfiction books are based on my personal experiences, experiences that have been enhanced and developed by meeting people just like you.

As a ghostwriter, I sometimes take other people's materials and write books for them. Some carried my name and others did not. (Ghostwriters are often noted with the word 'with' below the author's name.) Why do I ghostwrite? It's rewarding for me to help others tell their stories of inspiration and growth. For example, when I see and hear from readers of 90 Minutes in Heaven and they describe the peace they now have after losing a loved one, I'm gratified to be a part of telling that story.

I've had the opportunity to be a caregiver and work with a number of other caregivers for their loved ones. It's a difficult, but rewarding commitment. When you're dealing with challenges of Alzheimer's Disease, depression, or substance abuse in your family, it can be a time that stretches you personally and tries your faith.

Stop by my web site. Drop me an e-mail. I'd love to hear from you.

Once again, Cecil Murphey has created a beautiful gift book entitled, "When Someone You Love No Longer Remembers." His brief stories, prayers, practical advice and encouragement for caregivers would be a comforting gift book for those who are taking care of loved ones who can no longer remember. The book is also beautifully illustrated. I recommend this gift book to caregivers.

When Someone You Love No Longer Remembers

Cecil Murphey has written a beautiful book for family and caretakers of those with dementia and Alzheimer's Disease. It truly is a gift book that you will want to put into anyone's hands that may be facing these situations.

Beautifully illustrated by Michal Sparks, the artwork was amazing and I could picture it as a book to leave out at condos.

You can use this book as a daily devotional as I had started to do or just pick it up and read it whenever needed. After starting it, the stories gripped me and I wanted to devour the book and find the words of comfort and get them inside me.

As someone who has known several family members and friends diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease, I so wish this book had been written sooner.

Knowing the genetics link that is in my family can be a scary thing and I hope that the good ideas, hope and healing of the words will bring comfort to many people.

The Appendix, with helps like Take Care of Yourself, Communicating with Your Loved One, Expecting the Unexpected, and Help Your Visitors was a wealth of information that we all need.

I think you should do an another book on this subject, Cecil, as there are a lot more stories out there, and perhaps do it as a daily devotional. Every family needs a copy of this gift book!

No one can understand what it is like to still have the person you love sitting beside you, and yet at the same time you are not able to connect in the way you once were... because they no longer remember you. As I read through this book, that "feeling invisible" part jumped out at me over and over again, because though there are many books that tell a caregiver how to take care of logistics, there are not enough that address the internal emotional struggle you experience. And when you are simply exhausted, who wants a long read? This beautiful book that is both written and illustrated with love is the perfect book to keep in your purse, stick in your car (for when you walk away from a visit with a loved one and go home). It's for those moments before going to a visit, or going somewhere you know people will ask you questions and you need to have enough emotional strength to get through. As the book Beyond Casseroles: 505 Ways to Encourage a Chronically Ill Friend) encourages people on how to reach out to those who are chronically ill--including their family, this book does even a better job at the specifics involved when someone you love no longer remembers. Cecil Murphey has done it again, providing both wisdom and comfort in a package that will fit your needs just right.

What I really like about this book is that it has brief, but meaningful and inspirational snippets from various people of differing perspectives offering suggestions on how they cope with their loved one whose memory is fading. When a person is experiencing heartbreaking, depressing situations, the last thing they want to do is read a lengthy self help book, so this book is perfect. Cec Murphey has put When Someone You Love No Longer Remembers together beautifully and appropriately, providing just enough encouragement to help the reader face each day with their loved one. At the end, there are tips for the caregiver, such as how to take care of themselves, how to help visitors cope, and how to take care of their loved one in a manner that makes the day as non-stressful as possible. The book even goes a step further with the illustrations done in pastels and seascapes, having a calming effect on the reader. I would definitely recommend this book to someone dealing with Alzheimers or dementia in a loved one. It can be just the encouragement they need for such a bleak period in their life.

It's hard to find a family untouched by Alzheimer's or dementia. Your neighbor's forgotten how to feed himself. Your co-worker's wife becomes agitated when she can't recall the word she needs. And the man at church slips further into silence every day.

With firm yet compassionate words, author Cec Murphey comes alongside caregivers to offer empathy, understanding, and advice borne of experience. WHEN SOMEONE YOU LOVE NO LONGER REMEMBERS presents a treasure chest of caregiver wisdom in gift book format. Tender illustrations, true stories, and real-life examples end in the aphorisms that have become Murphey's trademark. A brief section about laying aside our dreams ends with the bolded statement "I didn't ask for this assignment. But as I serve my loved one, I'm also serving my loving God."

I'll share my review copy with a friend struggling to balance work, church responsibilities, and caring for her mother. Bless the caregiver in your life with the gift of this tender, touching, and to-the-point publication.
