    Editorial Reviews

    Review

"Rising star Dawn returns with a prequel to No Words Alone. Set on a distant planet, this book is really a detective thriller heavily spiced with romance. The author does a great job with character development. Dawn is proving to be quite the talent." Romantic Times, 4 Stars, HOT --Romantic Times Book Reviews

    4.0 out of 5 stars More like 4 1/2 stars.... July 31, 2009
    Format:Mass Market Paperback
There's something about Hyna Blue that touches Gem Harrisdaughter. Her offer of a job is meant to be charity but she soon realizes there is more to Hyna than she first thought. Meanwhile, Gem's very livelihood is in jeopardy and Hyna's determination to be her bodyguard may be all that stands between life and death for her. What will happen WHEN SPARKS FLY?

WHEN SPARKS FLY is actually a prequel to NO WORDS ALONE, despite the release dates. Gem is the family matriarch and she takes her duties towards her sisters and their inn quite seriously. Her attraction to Hyna isn't surprising as she is used to mothering and Hyna initially presents as someone in need of direction. However, Hyna is clearly all Alpha male as readers will soon see. The clash between two such dominant personalities is inevitable... and quite intriguing against the futuristic backdrop of WHEN SPARKS FLY.

Autumn Dawn writes romances with a lot of heart-tugging emotions in them. As the story unfolds, the dilemma Hyna faces is by no means an easy one. Conversely, Gem's anger is also completely understandable. Both characters are so dedicated and honest that it's heartbreaking to see the troubles they must face. Hyna and Gem are two characters that deserve their happily-ever-after and Autumn Dawn more than delivers! Easily recommended!

2.0 out of 5 stars could have been better July 16, 2009
    Format:Mass Market Paperback
Actually I'm not sure what to think after reading the first two reviews. After finishing this book, I was convinced I was reading the work of a first time author. Apparently I was mistaken in that assumption. And in being so, I am doubly disappointed about this product. While the author made a valiant attempt of creating depth and character to the story as a whole, it fell kind of flat and at times felt repetitive to the point of becoming boring. Most of her characters were developed enough to create that emotional connection to the reader, though it did feel somewhat rushed and presumptuous. However, what was glaringly lacking in the narrative, and really what was most unforgiveable for an accomplished author, was this jumbled mess of a plot. It did not seem to be all that cohesive, there were a lot of jerky transitions, and really too many major plot developments occurred in too little amount of time. It was extremently confusing because the author would have one major development happen and without pause to process with the characters or even make an attempt at a transition, would create another major development. But in the next sentence the author would write that whole days had passed in between action scenes without giving any indication that time had passed so rapidly within the scene itelf. Additionally, there was very little that was descriptive in the narrative. And that which was descriptive, felt superficial. It almost felt like, as this was a prequel to an already written story, the author either did not have as much invested into it or was afraid of repeating herself. In that capacity, I believe the editing is equally at fault here. There were portions of the story line that felt it was not fitting well, as if it was part of a different draft. Read more ›

I was so looking forward to this book. I was surprised it had come out earlier than Nov 09. This is actually a prequel to No Words Alone. If you have not read the first one, this one can be read alone. I felt the story was a little flat compared to her first book. BTW I am a huge fan of Autumn Dawn's Beast Warrior series so I think she is a great author.

I would have like to have seen more continuity between her first book and this one. I also a little confused with her timeline and the romantic tension between the main characters was just not there (IMO). Still a worthwhile read

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent futuristic romantic urban Noir May 29, 2009
    Format:Mass Market Paperback
On Polaris when their father died his three daughters Gem, Brandy and Xera took over the Spark tavern. Society on the mining planet is very restricted concerning behavior so the three Harris sisters are careful so that their reputations stay intact.

When Hyna Blue started drinking in the tavern, Gem realizes he did hard time as he has special cybernetic implants. She hires him though she assumes he will leave rather soon as he is a wanderer. However, her heated blood over boils whenever she is near Hyna. He feels the same but fears he will lose his cover as an aimless drifter concealing he is and undercover narcotics agent who believes The Spark is a major dealership.

This an excellent futuristic romantic urban Noir that grips the audience from the moment that Gem hires Hyna and never slows down as he works his case while falling in love. The heroine is a perfect Gem as she understands NO WORDS ALONE will explain how the drifter heats her blood with one look. Fans will enjoy this super science fiction romantic suspense as the undercover agent wants to be under the cover with the tavern owner.

I have to say that for some reason this book just did not hit the mark for me . I really love paranormal romance but this one I had a lot of trouble with . I like Autumn Dawn's books but for myself this is one series I do not think I will buy.

    More About the Author

Autumn is a professional writer and stay at home mom with three kids, a dog and an active imagination. She's married to her high school sweetheart, John, who is known to bring her flowers "just because".

After 34 years in Alaska, she moved to Washington with her family to enjoy a state with actual seasons.

She started self-publishing in 2010 after a string of rejections that read, "We love your writing, but we're not sure how to market it." She published on Smashwords, Amazon and Barnes & Noble, which lead to a number of bestsellers. After The Charmer hit #1 on Barnes & Noble for fantasy romance, she threw herself into editing and uploading her backlist.

The next year and a half passed in a blur as she worked non-stop, and productivity declined as she took time to homeschool her autistic son, who was suffering from bullying issues. With boxing lessons and a year to boost his confidence and academic skills, he's now doing well in mainstream high school.

The strain of maintaining a business and home schooling while taking care of her family was draining, but God blessed her efforts and the results were worth it. Her income for 2011 was $100,000, far exceeding her best year with traditional publishing.

In 2012, Amazon acquired Dorchester books and Autumn gave Amazon the right to publish two of her Spark Series books, When Sparks Fly and No Words Alone, believing that diversification is good business.

While Autumn is grateful for the opportunities traditional publishing provided, she remains passionate about self-publishing.
