Book Description

June 8, 1988
John White has extensively interviewed many people, including those from John Wimber's Vineyard Christian Fellowship. His years of work as a psychiatrist and as a missionary in the Third World qualify him in a special way to analyze the experiences described in this book. In addition he has thoroughly studied revivals of the past, highlighting the differences and the similarities to what is happening today. As always, John White remains thoroughly biblical as he handles many controversial topics. The result is a book full of pracitcal wisdom and remarkable insight with conclusions that are fresh and surprising.

More About the Author

John White was born in Liverpool, England, on March 5, 1924, and grew up in Manchester. After serving as a reconnaissance photographer in the Fleet Air Arms during World War II, he completed medical training at Manchester University. He later participated in a variety of short-term missions efforts (including Bible smuggling!) and captitalized on many opportunities to encourage Christians behind the Iron Curtain during the beginning of the Cold War.

On June 25, 1955, White married Laureate May O'Hara. From 1955 to 1964 he served as a medical missionary with New Tribes Mission. Later he was appointed associate general secretary of the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students of Latin America.

White emigrated to Canada with his family in 1965 and later completed his residency in psychiatry in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He next filled the post of associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Manitoba and also served locally as pastor of Church of the Way.

He wrote 25 books as well as numerous articles and study guides. A much sought-after speaker, he lectured around the world at churches, conferences and leadership events. During his later life, White moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, helping to plant a Vineyard church there (Surrey Vineyard) and becoming involved in the larger Vineyard Christian Fellowship.

John White died in 2002, but his written ministry lives on, with over 1.5 million of his books in print.

5.0 out of 5 stars Helpful in personal preparation for revival, January 13, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: When the Spirit Comes with Power: Signs & Wonders Among God's People (Paperback)
John White, M.D. is a psychiatrist, bible teacher, and former missionary. His experiences in these roles give him the qualifications to sort out for us the claims and controversies about what God is doing--or not doing-- around the world. As a Bible teacher he examines revival experiences being reported today, and with the cautious insight of the scientifically-trained physician subjects them to rigorous scrutiny. The church--the entire church--should listen to White. A few chapter titles show his concerns: "Has It Ever Happened before?" "Should We Fear Emotions?" Are Revival Experiences Psychological?" "Are Revival Experiences Spiritual?" "Preparing for Revival" and so on for 11 more chapters. Near the end of this excellent book, White writes: "[The] earnest cry to God in prayer at a critical point in the church's history had incredible results. It is time to prove God again." (p.235) This work will certainly help to promote the human preparation for a revival which will come when God chooses to pour down his blessings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for "open but cautious" who want to know more about signs and wonders, November 2, 2011

This review is from: When the Spirit Comes with Power: Signs & Wonders Among God's People (Paperback)
For those who want to better understand the supernatural. It illustrates how God's ways are above our ways, and goes over many helpful and historical examples, with lessons-learned.

Many either are for or against the supernatural, but this offers a biblically-based and unbiased look, considering both sides (blessings and cautions). God is not constrained to follow our expectations of how his Spirit works in us. God can bless us and reveal his working in various ways. We don't have to let the fact that "the bad guy" can pervert "the good" cause us to attribute God's work as evil.

Leave your prejudices behind and you may appreciate a balanced perspective, rather than a cynical one.

This book is very informative. If you are interested in the different reasons people do not believe in the supernatural and how God works in the lives of these people to believe. This is a book for you. It helps you realize we cannot put God in a box he will not stay there. He is still working in the lives and details of his people.
