I wish I could give this book five stars. It covered an era of post-Civil War history that I struggle to understand--how the former slaves gained freedom and then lost so much of it. The dynamics are eye-opening, and the story line illustrated it well. I appreciated the characters and came to care about some, detest others, understand some of what drove all of them. The writing itself was all right, though at times the dialogue did not convince me the characters lived in that era. But what really bothered me was the lack of proof-reading (at least in my Kindle edition, if that makes a difference.) The errors were the type auto-correct would not pick up: extra words that should have been deleted, verbs that did not agree with their pronouns, mis-uses such as "prostate" (mail reproductive organ) instead of "prostrate" (lying face down on the ground), name and pronoun gender disagreement, and so on. I would not comment on this, and would be more specific if I had not seen such an extraordinary number of them that I would have to read the book through again to catalog them all. A few of these could be overlooked, but there were so many that I cannot believe this manuscript was actually proofread by anyone. It became like a fingernail scraping a blackboard after a while. I wish someone in a position to make changes would proofread this. :-(

WHEN STARS ALIGN is a truly epic love story, told against the backdrop of an extremely volatile time in U.S. history. I found the story fascinating, and the characters were extremely real. The antagonists leaps from the page with a ferocity and clarity that made my skin crawl at times, while the poignancy of Amy and Thaddeus' ill-fated love was of Shakespearean proportions. The language of this novel was very period-appropriate, though modern readers will find it at times both jarring and appalling. However, this accomplishes the story's purpose: to give us a realistic look into the lives and love that unfolded during a time of devastation and hope. The plot moved at a brisk pace, hitting all the high points in the events leading up to and following the Civil War. We are introduced to famous key players, like Lincoln and Stephen Douglas; people who affected the course of a nation. We also get to know (and love) the "everyman" characters that were impacted. The injustice suffered by the black and colored population is recounted with an even hand, so that the romance still shines through; the thread that holds this story together. Any self-respecting historical romance enthusiast will devour this book with relish. Even if historical romance isn't your cup of tea, this novel is a fabulous piece of fiction, one that I'm sure many will enjoy!

Carole Eglash-Kosoff is a master at fictional history and I love history! Also I love authors who can poetically weave a compelling story inside historical events. When Stars Align has a long list of engaging characters that are so well defined that you can picture them in your minds eye. It is so much fun you want to cast the movie. From the Civil War to the Emancipation Proclamation, the love story between the two main characters, Thaddeus and Amy is extraordinary as they and there families overcome so much during those turbulant yet triumphant times in the mid-late 19th century. Thank you for sharing your gift of writing. Looking forward to the sequel! Please continue this one Carole! You have the gift.

WHEN STARS ALIGN is a beautifully told story. I was transported in time and felt like I was there with the rich characters. I could see them, feel the depths of their feelings and appreciate their circumstances. The story flowed and carried my spirit with it, often shaking me to the core. I loved the narrative and voice of the author. The historical references were educational and put everything into context. Addressing such unfortunate hatred, bigotry and man's inhumanity-to-man is courageous. Balancing those atrocities with stories of kindness, humanity, love, unity, family, cooperation, beauty, and mutual respect is genius. I hope there will be a sequel.
