From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2-- In this gentle celebration of the seasons, a young girl tells her mother that when summer ends she will "cry and cry. . .because everything good happens in summer." Her mother reminds her of autumn joys such as celebrating Halloween and jumping in piles of crisp leaves. The little girl agrees that she likes autumn, and counters with, "I don't like winter." Through the calendar, her mother reminds her of the pleasures to be found in each season, until at last, the cycle comes back to summer. With childlike mercurialness, the little girl tells her mother, "Nothing good ever happens in summer." The text rings true in this thoroughly charming book. Russo's illustrations are a pure delight. Rich russet tones capture the warmth of a family sharing the simple joys of each season. The many full-page spreads evoke the mood of each moment, capturing with clarity the times a child treasures. This is a book meant to be shared in any season. --Lori A. Janick, Parkwood Elementary School, Pasadena, Tex.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book on the 4 Seasons, August 21, 2000

This review is from: When Summer Ends (Hardcover)
If you want your 3-7 year olds to understand the 4 seasons (winter, spring, summer, fall), this is about as good a book, as any.

The story features a girl having a conversation with her mother in the beginning explaining, "When summer ends I will cry and cry." When her mother asks why, the daughter lists all of the things she loves about summer (watermelon, splashing in the pool, etc). Her mother then asks her about each successive season pointing out the things that she (and most children) loves about those seasons.

The illustrations that accompany each season's features will have your children talking about what their favorite seasons are for days to come.
