Editorial Reviews

Review

"The problem addressed in Betty Breuhaus's practical and amusing book is: If you don't plan your own funeral, someone else will... It's hard to write breezily about such a dark topic, but When the Sun Goes Down succeeds, marvelously." -- Alex Beam "Boston Globe columnist"

A Must Have Book! July 19, 2009
Format:Paperback
Several in my family thought it quite strange that I would agree to review a book about planning a funeral especially after the many deaths we have had in our family the past year, yet this was something I wanted to do, and I'm glad I did.

Let's face it, death is coming to each one of us, some sooner than later, but it's coming. It is very sad that most of us do not plan for this and leave all the details to those we love, those who are hurting and emotionally distraught. It is time we all take responsibility for not only our lives, but our deaths.

Inside the pages of this great book our author, Betty Breuhaus, takes you by the hand and leads you through your last page on earth. It is a book packed full of useful knowledge in many areas such as: Benefits of a Funeral, Funeral Homes, Disposition of the Body, Cemeteries, Type of Service and Obituaries, among others. Each category has subtopics such as Headstones, under Cemeteries. The information cleared up so many misconceptions that I had about so many things. At the end of the book our author includes a Personal Funeral Planner so you can have everything in order and believe me after experiencing taking care of so many funerals this year, that would be a true gift for your loved ones.

This is a great book, not morbid as one might assume, but packed with information, and even some humor along the way. Very well written, sensitive and informative. I recommend it for every living person, and don't delay, we never know when the bell will toll. I plan to put my copy to use and know my loved ones will have one less thing to worry about.

Do it Your Way July 20, 2009
Format:Paperback
When I was asked to read and review this book, my response was "sure--cool cover". While some people might shy away from books about planning your own funeral, I thought hey if we made out our wills, why not read this book. I've already accepted the fact I'm not living forever.

In When the Sun Goes Down, the author offers thought provoking suggestions in planning the celebration of your life. From traditions services to some creative, unique events which I never thought about, the options out there are too many too mention in this review.

The book is only 160 pages (12 chapters), however, almost every page contains helpful information on this subject people don't seem to openly discuss. The topics covered are:

Benefits of a Funeral
Funeral Homes
Disposition of the Body
Cemeteries
Type of Service
Fundamentals
Service Basics
Service Enhancements
Service Accessories
After Party
Obituaries
Ethical Wills

Also included are references and a Personal Funeral Planner. A serious topic, but not too dark, the book also includes some illustrations and epitaphs of the monuments of some well known people.

Certainly, not a book everyone will move to the top of their wish list, but a well done reference guide that will help people who enjoy taking control, to have a say in their final celebration.

Funeral Planning July 24, 2009
By BevE
Format:Paperback
Betty Breuhaus book When the Sun Goes Down is the perfect planner for Planning for The Funeral of Your Life. There's a wide variety of subjects that are discussed from the funeral itself to disposition of the remains, types of cemeteries, services, even obituaries and types of wills. The reader is given respite with humorous epitaphs, photos of unique headstones and interesting notes of famous burials which is appreciated because it is needed, no matter how prepared we may feel, it still is a task we would rather forget about. The best time to plan is before there is the need. Even though I felt I knew everything needed to make my own decisions, there are new options, especially greener options for burial.
When the Sun Goes Down is a short book, to the point and an indispensable guide. A 5 star read.
