Biography

Outside of Philadelphia I was born and raised, and in the playground I spent quite a few of my younger days. At the time I had a preference for brunettes but years pass and we change. When my tendencies turned toward blondes I began to hear the call of the big rotten apple and at eighteen, away I went. Gone were the lonely, sweaty summer nights of PA. The crickets were still cricken’ ... Read more in Amazon's Langhorne Slim Store

Editorial Reviews

Langhorne's songs come out of American vernacular music the race and hillbilly sounds that peaked in the `20s and `30s in what Greil Marcus so famously called 'the old, weird America'. Well, Langhorne makes music for the new, weird America. It's not like it's political music, it's just that we live in intense times and Langhorne brings it all back home in the form of music. Narnack. 2005.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Born to let it shine!" October 15, 2005
Format:Audio CD
What is it about the mystical land of Brooklyn, NY that has drawn a multitude of world-class musical talent to dwell in its nooks and crannies, recording monstrously creative albums?

You could write 1,000 words on Langhorne Slim's banjo and upright bass wizards alone. His tracks are so down-home cracklin', as is his voice! Slim's fun, gospel-fied, punk-grass will move you and get you movin'. Cameos from the Pedal Steel, Accordion and Trombone elevate the songs. In addition to Slim's furious strumming, the listener is treated to heavy doses of Rhodes electric keys, Hammond b3 organ, "Ragtime" piano and a sweet drum kit!

Yee-ha!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pick this up! October 16, 2006
Format:Audio CD
I picked this up based on the fact that it had fun album art and and the tag said foot stamping love songs, this tag is in fact true. This is a up beat collection of love songs and ditties. I really enjoyed the album for its witty light hearted lyrics and fantastic untamed tunes. While lite the musicianship is excelent. Langhorne Slim's voice is enchanting and the tinny quality to the recording really adds to the gritty feel of the album. Overall, this is just a really enjoyable album for listening to by yourself, to play in the background of a party or to dance madly to on the street.

I heard "In the Midnight" shortly after it came out on the KEXP podcast and was immediately struck. It is one of those tracks that when you hear the first part you know something good is coming and I was not let down. I had to own the album and was VERY pleasently suprised that while the sound and style varies a bit from song to song it works. I have this and every Langhorne Slim album since this one and they are all great, but this one has something different. Perhaps it is more of the bit more raw of a sound, I am not sure. I love his later albums too, but this one in particular would be one of my desert island disks. I can listen to it over and over and over. It is an odd mix of styles of bluegrass, rock, the blues, country and folk that somehow works exceptionally well. Yeah, I know I sound like I am gushing, but that is only because this album really is that good. Hows this...In my media player of choice, there are only 3 songs on this album I have not rated 4 stars or above. Anyhow, you will not be disappointed.
