About the Author

J. K. Beck spent more than ten years as a litigator in Southern California and central Texas, using her rare free time to indulge her passion for writing. Now she uses her legal background as inspiration for her paranormal romantic suspense series the Shadow Keepers, set in and around a secret judicial system hidden within and mirroring our own. California-born, J. K. Beck lives and writes in Texas, where she hangs out with her husband and daughters and drinks far too much coffee.

Review courtesy of All Things Urban Fantasy.

WHEN TEMPTATION BURNS feels more like my first Paranormal Thriller rather than a Paranormal Romances. Though Andy and Doyle do provide strong romantic elements, they share the narrative perspective with many of the major players in the plot. Both heroes and villains get to tell their side of the story, and Beck doesn't flinch from weaving emotionally and morally complex themes into the plot.

It was just that depth that allowed the plot to completely steal the show in this book. The romance was enjoyable, the action scenes were often too over the top for me, but the cat and mouse game of law enforcement trying to contain angry, powerful groups intent on their own vendettas was both thrilling and nuanced. Though this was my first of The Shadow Keepers series, I had no difficulty catching up and buying into the plot. Beck does a wonderful job giving both sides of the conflict human elements, and explores how violence, revenge, fear, forgiveness, and love all impact communities, whether mortal or paranormal.

While I appreciated the minimum of unnecessary drama, I would have welcomed a few interesting flaws or details in the main characters. Though Beck's plot was morally nuanced, the main characters themselves rarely push boundaries. Doyle and Andy are more heroic, plucky, and clear-eyed than the lesser characters around them, which meant they were rather more predictable and less interesting than the twisty, difficult plot in which they starred. As a character driven reader, this lowered my appreciation for WHEN TEMPTATION BURNS from 4 bats to 3. The plot has me interested, but as of right now, neither the world nor its characters have me hooked enough for pre-orders.

Sexual Content: Several sex scenes and attempted rape.

Format: Mass Market Paperback
Using his ability to see and feel a person's final moments before death, agent Ryan Doyle is led to a radical human group whose mission is to expose and eradicate the shadow world. Half daemon himself, Ryan must be careful when going undercover to find out their next move. A task he's able to manage until he's around the woman who dominates his every thought. Andy is a reporter looking to write a story about men who believe vampires and werewolves walk among us. Realizing there's truth to their stories, Andy will work alongside Ryan, a man who both frightens and excites her, to stop a plot to kill innocents.

Ryan is an agent for the PEC, or Preternatural Enforcement Coalition. It's his job to investigate crimes in the shadow world and hunt down anyone who breaks their laws. Ryan is dedicated to this work and not a lot else has been given about his back ground. In this book we learn of his heartbreaking past and painful experiences with women. Though he's rigid and too serious a lot of the time, I've liked Ryan and I'm glad he finally opens up and shows there's more to him than his job.

Andy is a reporter and that's pretty much the only thing that's interesting about her until things become serious with Ryan. Ryan once loved a human but things ended tragically when she learned what he is. Andy was recently told her mother was murdered by a preternatural. After this is revealed, I thought I knew how their relationship would unfold. Some of it is predictable and their relationship progressed a little too quickly but the emotional connection is there and Andy surprised me with how she dealt with everything. She's opened minded, brave and accepts Ryan for what he is. I gotta love a heroine who is actually rational.

Format: Mass Market Paperback
In Los Angeles several homicides have occurred in which the female victims were mutilated and their blood drained. The Preternatural Enforcement Coalition is concerned that psychopaths believing their genocidal end justifies the mean by killing the innocent is trying to expose their paranormal species to the larger human populace. They assign Preternatural Enforcement Coalition centuries-old paradaemon Agent Ryan Doyle to investigate.

Reporter Andrea Tarrent follows the same story as Ryan is. He is shocked by his attraction to her as he takes pride in his self-control. She reciprocates his confusion and his desire. As they team up in pursuit of a serial killer(s), his efforts to conceal his essence and the preternatural existence prove increasingly impossible while Andy wonders what the hell she has gotten into.

The latest Shadow Keepers romantic urban fantasy (see When Darkness Hungers) grips fans from its opening sequence of three humans stalking a werewolf and never slows down until the final confrontation. Part of the fun is the intrepid reporter knows her "partner" hides something humongous and she plans to find out what the secret is. When Temptation Burns is a terrific entry as the streets of L.A. burn with a genocide like intensity so that Andy will leave readers knowing who the monsters truly are.

I like all of the books in this series, but this one is one of the best! I can't wait to read more books in this series. Love J. K. Beck's writing style and in each of these books, the underlying storyline is continued.
