5.0 out of 5 stars Best treatment on the subject that I have read February 8, 2013
This is the most useful compilation of wisdom, common sense, product info. and obvious real life experiance I have seen as applied to the subject of "now what do I do?" when everything "goes to pot". Tony gives you everything you need without a lot of "fluff" by breaking things down into seven important subjects and giving you all you need on each. I thoroughly enjoyed Tony's writing style (very easy read) and the way he relates many hard- learned and sometimes humorous lessons. Tony does well at pointing out solutions that are down to earth using commonly available items vs. having to buy the latest "fadsy" gear. His product and material lists at the end of each segment are a treasure that I am using as a shopping guide to bolster my own preparations.

This book is perfect for everyday people like me. It's easy to read and the author interjects a sense of humor along the way which really helps! I like that he gives specific examples of the products he recommends and shows pictures, which also helps. I'm not a survivalist; I'm just an everyday person looking for ways to be prepared should an emergency occur. With the recent tornadoes and weather issues, along with the scare of what I would do should the power go out for an extended time, this book is direct and extremely helpful. The author mentions things that had never occurred to me, should a hurricane hit or power go out. He walks you through scenarios and offers basic everyday items you can use. An excellent guide on how to be prepared without investing a lot of money. I have recommended this book to several of my friends and they have started using some of these ideas in their daily lives to help them be ready should something happen. I'm a nurse in an urban hospital and some of the ideas he mentions for first aid were remarkable and often not known, even to medical people. I especially like the summary at the end of each chapter with a review of suggested items. If you only do one thing to prepare for a disaster, you should get this book. I've gotten one for each of my kids to keep in their emergency kits.

5.0 out of 5 stars Required Reading February 5, 2013
Tony Nester has done it again! This book is a must have for anyone striving to live a more self-reliant lifestyle. Nester's approach to home disaster preparedness is a refreshing change to the all too common zombie apocalypse genre. Rather than fill page after page with cartoon sketches and present an overdramatic view of an event; Tony draws from his exhaustive research and real world experience to present time tested skills/equipment in a practical/concise format. No stone is left unturned: survival psychology, heating and cooking, water, food storage, medical kits, personal security and home defense, lighting, shelter, hygiene, and more. In today's world of natural disasters, societal turmoil, and heavy-handed government you need to be prepared! This book should be your first step!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best overall book I've gotten on this subject February 8, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I'm a part-time outdoors survival instructor and have many texts on the subject of rural and urban survival. This short book by Tony Nester is the most complete one that I own. By that I mean he covers a broad range of subjects concerning everyday survival issues in depth enough that you know a little something about it after you read his work. The author has obviously spent a LOT of time working out the methods, tactics and techniques in this book.
Many books offer some things with a bit of depth to them, but Mr. Nester leaves out the extraneous things that don't work and cuts right to the chase of how and why you should use certain items and techniques.
I try to have my students have the least amount of survival library books as possible with the most amount of information possible in the few that they have. This book is now one of the four books I require them to read.
There are a lot of armchair commandos in the survival field that don't spend much time outdoors. This book is written by a guy who obviously spends the better part of his life learning and practicing his trade.
Excellent book and I highly recommend it for anyone interested in the subject.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Practical Guide February 7, 2013
This book serves as a practical and easy to implement guide on how to be prepared for realistic disaster scenerios. Not over-the-top, but very practical and easy to read. A must-have these days, whether you are a rural homesteader or urban beginner.

By Ron W.
As with Tony's other books, "When The Grid Goes Down" is a breath of fresh air in a sea of confusion regarding an often divisive subject. In the "doom-and-gloom" world of post-apocalyptic survival information, where it seems prerequisite to have stockpiles of weapons, ammo, a bunker, and all the latest gadgetry, Tony's low-tech, simple, and field tested approach to this hotly debated subject offers the rest of us the knowledge and confidence to prepare according to our individual resources and needs. Forget the phone book sized manuals that comb through every detail of how to survive a societal collapse, as if even the hobbyist "prepper" is going to read and digest all of that information. This small but information packed book will tell you exactly what works because the techniques have been tested and used in real-world scenarios.

While the information given is simple and basic even the seasoned survivalist will come away from this book with new ideas and information not found elsewhere. I wouldn't consider myself a hardcore prepper but I have an extensive amount of common knowledge on the subject of SHTF survival; some new ideas I came away with and never heard elsewhere are as follows.

Hygiene - While I know hygiene is important and have heard it elsewhere I didn't realize how important it really is. This is a subject that I think is often overlooked by a lot of other information sources. Thankfully it is a subject that is covered in depth in this book. Tony expounds on the importance of hygiene and how to take care of such necessities as latrines, bathing, laundry, dish-washing, and trash among others.
