Review

"What a helpless feeling many Christian parents have when contemplating the faith--or lack of it--in their adult children.  In a thoughtful, yet practical approach, Rob Rienow leads readers out of the desert of hopelessness. Filled with both grounding principles and practical helps, When They Turn Away will lead you through refreshing discoveries about what you can--and can't--do about this deeply personal situation."
Dr. Charles Arn, church consultant and author

Parents and grandparents will find practical help in this book to build closer relationships with their children. Through the scriptures and illustrations, Dr. Rienow reminds us we are not alone, it's never too late, and we must hold fast to the goal of our children placing their full faith and trust in Christ. Serving together on the church staff has given me the opportunity to appreciate Rob's character and devotion to Christ and his family. I can say, therefore, with unwavering assurance that you will richly benefit from reading this book.
Pastor John White

Dr. Rob Rienow has written an incredibly necessary book today that will not only inspire parents who have children that have turned from God, but it also provides practical things you can do to influence your wayward sons and daughters to give God another chance.  If you have children who have turned away from God, this is a must read book!

As a pastor, I come across people every week who are heartbroken over the choices that their children have made and are making. They're left with feelings of shame, despair, and isolation - uncertain where to turn for help, and often feeling that they have primary ownership of the struggles of their sons and daughters.

Rob Rienow has worked with thousands of families, and his experience and wisdom shines through in this encouraging resource. He offers a wonderful blend of objective biblical truth and hands-on examples of how parents can respond. I also appreciate the fact that Rob offers no simple solutions, as if the only thing moms and dads need to do is follow three easy steps and their children will be fine. God doesn't work that way, but the solutions offered are really lasting and substantial - sharing both the hope that the hearts of children can be changed and the knowledge of God's grace as moms and dads are left waiting.

Rienow, in my opinion, has written a resource that will be a centerpiece for parents of prodigals for years to come. I highly recommend it.

"I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in the truth." III John 3:4 The opposite of this is so devastating--"I have no greater sorrow than to hear that my children are not walking in the truth." The author gives real help and hope to parents who have children who are not living for the Lord. There are concrete things that we can do to try to turn our children's hearts back to the Lord. First we first search our own hearts make sure we are fully in tune with God. Then, we turn our hearts toward our children, then eventually they turn their hearts toward the Lord. It is not an easy self-help book, but a deeply thought-provoking, encouragement. It is not hopeless, but it does require determination to get serious with God, and pray, pray, pray.

Hindsight is 20/20, and now as a grandparent, I look back on myself as a parent and see much room for improvement. This well written book gives a starting point for interaction with adult children who have left the faith. I am on my second reading-this time working through the steps given.

I found this book both immensely practical and scriptually sound. I liked that this is not a formulaic book with a list of steps that must be followed precisely in order to achieve the desired results i.e. "Ten easy ways to fix your adult child." Also, this is in no way about beating people over the head with the Bible. The author starts out by giving you some interesting background on why so many young adults are abandoning their faith--why they are "just not buying any of it." Then he gets to the heart of the matter: What should I do about it? Reinow outlines four main points that could be called "steps" but really seem like more of a guide. These are: offer your heart to the Lord, turn your heart to your child, draw your child's heart to yours, and point your child's heart to Christ. He freely admits there is no guarantee that your child will change if you follow them, but he gives you practical and non-threatening ways foster open communication. Within each of these principles is a wealth of advice, based on truth and respect. I think this book will be very helpful to parents and grandparents of adult children who have shut the Lord out of their lives. I know I found it that way. Highly recommended. (I was given a free copy of this book through Goodreads and Kegel Publications)

I need to read more of it, but I think it is very helpful in understanding where young people are today and what we can do to change this tide in the church.

I agree that the problem of adult children placing God after other earthly ambitions is a problem all Christians should be concerned with. The book appropriately outlines methods by which parents of adult children can use to influence their child to place God at the center of their lives. One difficulty with the book is that some of the methods seem to presuppose that the adult child is already Christian or so easily willing to abandon their post-modern ideologies and beliefs prevalent in their generation.

My wife and I both have children new hearts so that they would repent and accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior. Rob Rienow gives some solid advice about what we can do, beyond praying. Some of his advice makes sense and some of it seems a little too optimistic in terms of parent/grown child relationships. I recommend this book - it has provided us with comfort and some helpful advice.
