This review is from: When the Time Had Fully Come: Studies in New Testament Theology (Paperback)
This little book is a concise introduction to Redemptive History in the theology of Herman Ridderbos. It competently explores the New Testament to show how the kingdom of God functions as the central theme in God's plan of redemption. Ridderbos explains that this view is not in conflict with the teaching of Calvin and the classic reformers, but rather, a lens through which we ought to view their teaching.

In many ways, this book functions as an introduction to the theology of Ridderbos as a whole. Chapters 1 and 2 summarize the heart of his teaching on the Gospels from Coming of the Kingdom. Chapters 3 and 4 summarize his Pauline theology from Paul: An Outline of His Theology. Finally, Chapter 5 is a helpful explanation of the development of the New Testament canon, a concise summary of Redemptive History and the New Testament Scriptures (Biblical and Theological Studies).

This book does require effort to read, but the work is well worth it. I was impressed with how much theology Ridderbos was able to explain in just over 100 pages. In particular, his treatment of the historia salutis and the eschatological character of the kingdom are very helpful, providing a corrective to modern interpretations that posit a theology of the Gospels that is significantly different from the theology of Paul. For Ridderbos, Jesus and Paul both proclaim one kingdom as part of one Redemptive History.

In short, this little book is able to introduce the reader to Ridderbos' eminently helpful theology in just over 100 pages. It is highly recommended.
