How I wish I had had a copy of this book when I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2001, or better yet, that Doc Ryan had been my oncologist!

The book is indeed comprehensive. He explains cancer and oncology in layman's terms and covers diagnosis, treatments, clinical trials, symptom control and side effects, pain, alternative medicine, and what we can look forward to in the foreseeable future. That's the physical part. At least as important are his wise words about patient autonomy, anxiety and fear, spiritual care, "but what do I say," hospice and end-of-life issues, and internet resources, with many general and specialized URLs.

Throughout, he made me think of a doctor drawn by Norman Rockwell who takes plenty of time to get to know his patients and answer all questions. He also seems to be a great teacher and a compassionate team leader who cares personally about every one of his patients. The stories at the end about the "heroes" among his patients are touching and inspirational.

I can't recommend this book highly enough for anyone facing cancer.

I got this book and read it in one day. Most of you know I have lost my whole family to cancer and recently I have had surgery for it myself. This is a book I wish my family had to read and I had before I went for my surgeries. It is a book to help calm your fears and anxiety.
The book is chalk full of fantastic information.
If you are someone you know has cancer this is a must read.
After reading this book I wish that Doctor Ryan was my oncologist. He really has it together and knows his stuff.
It is very sad to say but this is a much needed book in this day and time. I only wish that one day there will be no need for such a book when someone finds a cure for cancer but right now this is a book that most families should be reading.
I highly recommend this book.
I gave this book 5 stars.
I was given a copy of this book by the author for my honest review.

FROM THE ACADEMY BLOG [...]
The newly published book, When Tumor is the Rumor and Cancer is the Answer by Kevin P Ryan MD FACP is the cancer bible in that it is the only resource you will ever need- containing anything you would ever need to know about a cancer diagnosis. The subtitle, "A Comprehensive Text for Newly Diagnosed Cancer Patients and their Families" is certainly no understatement. Nevertheless, the word "text" should not intimidate the target reader, as in this case it does not imply this is a college medical book but rather a complete one stop resource. This book is written specifically for the cancer patient and his family- for the layperson who has no prior experience in the medical field. This ambitious volume covers everything from diagnosis, treatment and the health care team as well as the science and spirituality cancer as well.

The author, Kevin P Ryan MD FACP, draws from his personal, educational and practical experience as an oncologist. He dispels outdated myths such as the idea that cancer is a death sentence or that treatment must entail grueling pain and nausea. He writes with optimism based on concrete facts on new scientific advancements in treating cancer such as targeted therapies, gene therapies and modern symptom control. He gives objective and reliable information about ineffective alternative treatments and gives a word of warning about those who shameless profiteers who exploit the desperation of cancer patients in offering unproven treatments at heavy financial and emotional toll. His love of medicine, and pride in the achievements of medical science in the area of oncology is obvious. This once in a lifetime book offers a unique perspective to the mind of a doctor. In addition to his extensive medical credentials, Dr.

Kevin P Ryan, MD is a physician, a sensitive clinician, a learned oncologist and a humanitarian whose mission in life is to champion doctor patient relationships. In this extraordinarily sensitive book Dr. Ryan talks about cancer - ALL about cancer, from premonitions and early signals to selecting a physician to testing to diagnosing to coping with the impact of the diagnosis both for the patient and family to treatments to prospects to responses to scientific advances to learning the art of coping with the end of life questions and how to manage those financially, emotionally, realistically and spiritually. And the unexpected joy of reading a book about cancer, this hefty information-packed easily-accessible book is one of the most tender supportive volumes that has been published - a true candidate for awards in the understanding of cancer, not only for patients and families involved in the journey of dealing with cancer, but a extraordinary textbook for medical students about the inestimable importance of doctor patient communication and relationships.

In Dr. Ryan's eloquent yet homespun friendly introduction he offers the following: `This is not a medical text on the treatment of malignancy, per se, or prevention, screening, or cancer survivorship. This book describes what happens and what works best for the whole team when the possible diagnosis becomes the proven and potentially fatal diagnosis. A major aim of this book is the goal of reducing anxiety and helping those confronted with this disease to marshal their internal resources to conquer their natural fears and ultimately learn to become cancer survivors. I hope to address many of the often unspoken truths that, now found in one place, can act as a guide for what is for many the most frightening time of their lives.
