Book Description

February 8, 2002
Do you long for revival on your college or university campus? Is your heart burdened for the students you intract with each day? Here are some accounts of revivals in the past two centuries that will whet your appetite for the transforming work of God's Spirit on your campus today.

From the academic halls of America - Princeton, Yale, Harvard, Dartmouth, Brown, Middlebury, Union, Bethel, Wheaton, Williams, Trinity, Ashland, and many others - comes the stirring stories of awakening and revival.

On both secular and Christian Campuses, the moving of God is evident as men and women were converted and stirred to ministry and foreign service. Out of these pockets of awakening came the formation or strenghtening of student and campus fellowships such as InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, Youth for Christ, Campus Crusade for Christ, Navigators, and the YMCA.

Editorial Reviews

Review

When God walked on campus should be read by everyone concerned for America's college students and America's future. -- R. Albert Mohler, Jr., President, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky

From the Publisher

"Campus revivals have shaped successive generations of young Christians, and have even changed the course of our nation's history. Now, Michael Gleason, a faithful campus minister, offers a historical review and analysis of campus revivals in America. The accounts are moving and inspiring, and we should hope and pray that God will move among the present generation of college students as he has done in the past. When God walked on campus should be read by everyone concerned for America's college students-and America's future." - R. Albert Mohler, Jr., President, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for any campus ministry worker!, February 19, 2002

As one who has seen this book in the making for many years, it is with great joy that I see that it is now available to the public. Gleason's brilliant writing and tracing of the Spirit's movement in and among America's colleges and universities provides encouragement and hope --- indeed may the Lord visit us afresh during dark times. His writing is clear and concise, and will capture the reader's attention. It is difficult to put the book down. Gleason includes, alongside his historical survey, a small collection of outstanding sermons preached by such legendary figures as Timothy Dwight, Charles H. Spurgeon, Martin Lloyd-Jones, and J. Edwin Orr, whose faithful ministry of the Word was used by God in powerful ways during these exciting times. It encourages one to be faithful in the sound teaching and preaching of God's Word and in prayer as one seeks to make disciples on campus. Finally, Gleason sets forth some principles and patterns that were recognized throughout his historical survey that characterized these campus revivals. They are not meant to be prescriptive practices that would "induce" revival, since only God and his grace grants such movements in his timing and sovereign ways, but "these collective principles and patterns can assist believers in shaping a context of ministry where God is honoured more purely, Christ obeyed more readily and the Holy Spirit less likely to be grieved." (121) These principles and patterns should be in the forefront of our understanding and vision for any campus ministry and should saturate the mindset of each campus minister.

I recommend this book highly. It is brief and powerful, and is a must read for those in campus ministry at all levels.

5.0 out of 5 stars The book I always dreamed about, November 21, 2002

As a campus minister I have always enjoyed researching times that God has moved in the lives of college students... the cambridge 7, the haystack, asbury... It always renews hope in me as I labor on my campus. When I happened upon this book I thought, "this is the book I've been looking for!" Gleason's review is accurate and to the point. He covers moves of God on the campus, both big and small. This is a MUST READ for all college ministers. It will encourage you and increase your passion to see God, not only walk on campus again, but take up residence.
