1998's When Water Became Ice was the debut (and so far only) solo album from keyboardist/songwriter/guitarist Eddy Antonini of the long-running Italian power metal band Skylark. His Skylark bandmates are on hand, as is Labyrinth guitarist Olaf Thorsen.

I never quite get why a guy who has so much input into a band needs to do a solo project that ends up sounding exactly like that main band. Rhapsody's Luca Turilli did that with his first solo album (also ice-themed oddly enough) and Antonini has essentially replicated the Skylark sound here. When Water Became Ice has the classical-themed instrumentals (including some Bach renditions), speed metal guitar work, symphonic arrangements, high-pitched vocals and sterile production that characterize the Italian power metal sound. All this album really needs is a Luis Royo cover and a title referencing gates and it could be a Skylark disc.

When Water Became Ice isn't a bad album by any means, but it's not remotely an essential album either. If you're a hardcore Skylark fan or just have an insatiable appetite for Italian power metal, then by all means give it a shot. Casual fans should try some samples before buying. At minimum, the cover of Helloween's "I Want Out" is worth a (legal) download.
