I won't get into the meaning of this song beyond any shallow impressions I have of the lyrics. Despite that, I've surely listened to this song a few dozen times over the years. Certainly a worthy spend of a buck here on Amazon.

Sting at his ballad best,

To completely clarify this song is the first track and one of two original songs off "Fields of Gold" (Best of Sting) and is most certainly Sting's ultimate "love song." This would be appropriate as many couple's first dance at their wedding and I made sure that it was included on a tape that played during the dinner hour of our reception. I wanted my wife to hear the beautiful line "I will love you more than life, if you'll only be my wife" When you can write and sing lyrics like that you score big points with the women. The other tracks are 2 versions of Sting's first solo hit "If you love somebody (set them free)" which is almost always refered to as the answer follow-up/opposite to "Every breath you take." The final track is a hard to find yet good song taken from the movie of the same name "Demolition Man." Overall a quality collection for reasonable price if your collection needs "When we dance."

RE: A Voice for the Voiceless, Nice write-up, wrong song,

The song that speaks of Pinochet and his crimes is NOT "When we dance," but rather "They Dance Alone (Gueca Solo)," which appears on Sting's 1987 release "Nothing Like the Sun."

The Voice of the Voiceless,

It is a tragedy that crimes against humanity go unnoticed this late in the 20th century, but they do. Unnoticed until sometime refuses to turn a blind eye. "When We Dance" is a beautiful, altruistic song written by Sting that gives a voice to those victims of one man's indifference to human suffering. Augusto Pinochet was a name foreign to my ears before I heard this song. But what is most devastating is that I was ignorant of the cries of those tortured and killed by this man. That this should go unnoticed by so many people is inexcusable.... If Sting should chance upon these words, may I say to you sir, thank you. You have proven yourself not just a wonderful song writer, but a true humanitarian as well.
