5.0 out of 5 stars WYWM is a John Waite fan's delight!
This 1997 release from the incredibly talented singer/songwriter John Waite combines a surprising mix of the true blue romantic of John's past songs with a more mature socially aware musician who has travelled extensively through America. The musical style on this CD differs from his previous CD's (excluding Temple Bar) in that it is more guitar than keyboard. Shane...

3.0 out of 5 stars When You Were Fans
This is a good John Waite CD and should be had by all real fans of one our times best songwriters. Waite has suffered with rock station apathy since Bad English but this guy is more than that band could offer. "When You Were Mine" is a great follow up to "How did I Get By Without You" from the CD TEMPLE BAR and should be getting better support from...

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent follow-up album to "Temple Bar", October 23, 1999

John Waite continues to be one of the BEST singer/songwriters that NOBODY knows! He has once again given us insight into his most private feelings. He shines throughout the album and proves ,once again, that he will continue to produce high quality albums to a loyal legion of fans. Keep rock'n JW!!

Shane Fontayne, known best from his days with Springsteen, is a great compliment to John's singing. This album offers a hot blues number "Show Me How to Love You" as well as a Dylan remake, "Just Like a Woman". John Waite is superb in his command of lyrics and knowing just how to accentuate all the rights words. He wrote the album after travelling extensively throughout the United States, hence the songs "Bluebird Cafe" about a waitress who's gonna be a star one day, and "I-95", a fast paced tune about starting over and how great it is to be alive! Of course, his love songs are awesome as usual! "When You Were Mine", the title track, is a trip down memory lane with your old flame, and what a fun trip it is!! I don't know why this song wasn't played all over the radio!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Why Did I Wait So Long?, May 2, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: When You Were Mine (Audio CD)
I've been a fan for years - we're talkin back to when "Isn't It Time" first came out. Yet, I didn't buy this when it first came out.

I think it was because "Temple Bar" left a bad (or at least disappointing) taste in my mouth. While I loved "Downtown", the rest just seemed so uninspired to me.

Now I picked up a used version of "When You Were Mine" (sorry John, but hey I've padded your pockets with a lot of $$ over the years from other CDs!). I'm so glad I got this and am kickin myself for not getting it sooner.

I actually heard one tune before (Imaginary Girl always plays in my supermarket every month or so...very odd). The rest is equally amazing esp "Show Me How to Love You".

Don't wait. If you're a fan, get it. This is an extremely good CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars John Waite an English man abroad, February 8, 2000
This review is from: When You Were Mine (Audio CD)
Once again John comes up with some of the greatest lyrics that far to many people will never know such as "the snow fell like cocaine" on All I want for christmas. One day people will see and come to recgonise the genius he is. Tracks such as the title track "when you were mine" echo the warm summer days that he singss of while "suicide life" shows the dark desperate side of humanity today.

A classic album and a must buy for all those who know and worship this almost uknown genius. Check this album out it's gotta be worth it

5.0 out of 5 stars Another brilliant John Waite album..(an Aussie fan's opinion), March 7, 2006

I've been a JW fan since his days with the Babys but really got into his music in the 80's with "Missing You". This is another brilliant JW album! I don't think I could pick my favourite JW song, as there are too many, but my favourite from this CD is easily "Suicide Life". His voice and lyrics are so desciptive that I actually feel like I'm there. You guys in the States are so lucky to have the opportunity to see the great man in real life! My other favourites on this CD are "When you were mine", "Show my how to love you", "Have you seen her my friend" and "Imaginary girl". Buy this album!! If you're a JW fan, you won't be disappointed with this album. Buy it..and all the others too!

Its a shame this record didnt get air play on the radio. I didint even know he had this record out in 97. The guy deserves to get played on the radio. I bet a lot of JOHN WAITE fans lost touch because they never hear his music on the radio.

A different type of album from Waite,'When You Were Mine'is marked by an extreme economy and precision in songwriting and interpretation and all the top goodies we've been accustomed to expect from this much underrated artist. Some of the guitar duties are handled by none other than Jeff Golub,of Avenue Blue fame.
