Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

This entry in the American History through Primary Sources series, part of the Raintree Fusion high-low umbrella series, approachably covers a huge swath of civil rights history. Combining brief paragraphs with archival images and glossary sidebars, the book's topical spreads first present historical background, from slavery to the Civil War to lynchings, then move on to cover specific people and milestones as the movement gained steam. Readers are likely to find the stirring photos accompanying information about Little Rock desegregation and the Children's Crusade particularly fascinating. Sometimes language chosen for its simplicity can be jarring, such as the somehow inapt description of Jim Crow laws as a "big problem," and a curiously abrupt final spread deprives struggling readers of the sense of accomplishment that a more traditional conclusion could have delivered. But the dramatically presented material may spur reluctant or less-capable readers to tackle more complex treatments of this key curriculum area; a concluding list of related books and Web sites offers good places to start.
