Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3?Robin, a young boy with a new sled, is impatiently waiting for the season's first snowfall. As he frets and his mother soothes him, readers follow the winter preparations of some the creatures that live nearby?a deer mouse stores food, a snowshoe hare's coat turns white, and a three-legged fox hunts. This is a pleasant if slightly stilted story. Realistic watercolor illustrations fit the text well, and add to the feeling of anticipation.?Susan Chmurynsky, East Kentwood Freshman Campus, MI

From Booklist

Ages 3^-5. Suspense builds as a small boy in the North Country waits and waits for the first snowfall. The fictional story and watercolor paintings combine Robin's eager anticipation with information about what is happening to the animals in the forest, meadow, and mountains around him. As the highway crew gets sand and road salt ready, Robin longs to use his new sled and to see the world all covered in white. Animals are also preparing for the snow: a deer mouse is storing seeds and building a thick nest; a groundhog is in deep hibernation; a snowshoe hare has grown a new white coat. When the snow finally comes, Robin and his mother dance outside with delight. Robin's story makes winter exciting and introduces some basic facts about animal adaptation in the cold. Hazel Rochman

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent story and illustrations for young and old., June 12, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: When Will It Snow? (Hardcover)
After growing up in Canada and always looking forward to winter, this story brought back some of the best times of my life. Now in Brisbane with two children of my own, it is very nice to be able to tell them that that is exactly what it was like waiting for winter to come, and how I was always looking forward to winter. The illustrations capture the anticipation and once the snow arrives you can almost feel the fresh snow crunch under foot as Robin and his mother go for a walk in the forest. This book is one of my favorite to read to my daughters, I never tire of it and always feel like I have been waiting for winter all over again

5.0 out of 5 stars When Will It Snow, November 16, 2000

This review is from: When Will It Snow? (Hardcover)
This is such a wonderful book!! It reminds me of my son when he was little. He's 17 now and this book just floods those warm memories back. (He still waits impatiently for that first snow!) This little boy represents all of the children waiting for that first snow. It also shows a mother, doing what she can to lessen the continued disappointment in her child. When the cold snow finally begins, the rest of the story just warms your heart. Super, super book!
