Book Description

Charlee is making plans for a cozy mid-life: painting, traveling, getting the kids out of the house. She has even purchased tickets to Scotland, where her grandmother was born, and intends to whisk her husband away for a much needed break from the prosecutor's office. But when someone kills him in a hit and run, her "best laid plans" come to a screeching halt. When the aging local sheriff fails to track down the murderer, Charlee shifts into high gear, energized by the crazy idea she can find the killer on her own. Searching for the culprit is good medicine for her aching heart. She soon discovers that the hoity-toity family of the late Senator Mondragon are less than they seem, and she's caught up in the tendrils of crime creeping through the town of Whitewater like a noxious weed. Before she has uncovered all the answers, her investigation is detoured: she has to take a job teaching art in Snowflake, much further north, where, in a good winter, nobody dies in a blizzard. The upside is that she meets Ian, a handsome Scottish horse breeder. Though she's been single for two years, she's not quite ready for love. However, any man who can play the bagpipes and look that good in a kilt deserves a little attention. Strands of the mystery surrounding the Whitewater prosecutor's death reach Snowflake, where Charlee rents a drafty farmhouse for the winter and manages to survive, with a combination of ingenuity, dumb luck, and duct tape. Summoned back to Whitewater, she has hard choices to make and a real lesson to learn about letting go. Sparkling with humor, this thought-provoking mystery is all about doing hard things, and surviving loss with grace and gusto.
Now available: Book 2 in "The Art of Being Charlee" series, "If Spring Endures."

About the Author

Celestia Whitehead spent her childhood on a homestead in the Alaskan wilderness, where she thought life was idyllic. There she developed her artist's eye for raw beauty, but doesn't miss the winters. She and her husband, Van Whitehead, raised 12 children and lived in many places, including California, Idaho, and Alaska. He was killed in the small Idaho town where he was raised, and Celestia began teaching Art and English. Her first job was in a tiny town in northern Montana, where she survived winter nicely, but she opted to move to Salt Lake City, the cross-roads of the west, so she has a chance to see her grown children once in a while. She's now married to Wally Stewart and lives in Draper, Utah.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious, cool, and freaking loved it!! August 3, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I started out getting it for a friend but somehow ended up saving the copy on my iPad, during a slow day in class I pulled out my iPad and started to read When Winter Comes, then I couldn't stop, I read it from beginning to end and loved every minute of it. I really enjoyed how interesting the characters were, they all had a strong bond in the story line. I can't wait until book two comes out, I will be the first to buy it and share with my friends. Very entertaining. gave it five stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Art of Being Who? March 20, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A gentle story despite its tragic opening but the storyline is an all too familiar one of middle age woman widowed suddenly and trying to make her way with no real presence or help from a grown family. Charlie is frustrating as a character and I felt her a bit sneaky. It is revealed to the reader far deep into the story that her LDS background challenges her new life decisions but the resolution of this quandary - what to tell the new love interest in her life - is something of a dead end. Do we really believe that suddenly the man in Charlie's life "sees the light" and will eventually come to fill it? No secret that the story line revolves around the Mormon faith, but it isn't as straightforward as it should be, especially for a first in a series. I don't think I'll read further installments, my curiosity was not engaged.

3.0 out of 5 stars So Many Story Starts That Go Nowhere January 28, 2013
By Hezzie
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The potential for this book was huge! It is a book that you get excited for what should be coming but it never happens. Very disappointed and I'm not reading the next two in the series. Charlee was an enduring main character that you really could come to love but then the author even lost what she was to be like.

2.0 out of 5 stars When Winter Comes June 9, 2013

I was more interested in the bio of the author than in what she had written. The story line was okay, but not what I expected.

This book has so many mysteries, you will hate to put it down until you have finished it. Ended differently than I expected but that made it even more interesting. I do recommend this book.
