2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed in First Two Books
First, I wish to say that D. Shane Burton has a great imagination. Also, he has a very original premise about rifts in space allowing life from Earth to inhabit other worlds.

However, I was disappointed. The previous reviews gave the trilogy five stars. I didn't go any further than the second book because, in my opinion, they were not well written. The...

5.0 out of 5 stars Just Loved this Book!, June 29, 2004
This review is from: When Worlds Rage (Paperback)
This book is a readers delight. The book may appear to open slow and drag, but that is not the case. For those that read regularly it is a necessary step to get you aquatinted with the characters (old and new) as the author moves forward. It took me a couple of chapters to get my memories of the characters straightened out, after that it was off to fantasyland! The Author does a superb job of welding the characters and subplots together until the climatic battle. What I found truly impressive is his ability to place Biblical Truths throughout the story without coming across as a "bible thumper".

I must warn you though, you will have some favorite characters and they might not survive. I know one of mine didn't.

My other warning is to the Author who better get that Third Book done cause I want to know what happens!

For a self-published book, this is truly First Class effort for the second straight time! Great Job Shane!!

I highly recommend this book and also "Black Storm Rising" by this same author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even more surprises than the first one!, June 23, 2005
This review is from: When Worlds Rage (Paperback)
This book has even more surprises than the first one! Just when you think you know what's going to happen there is a huge twist instead.

When Worlds Rage contains even more unique cultures and exciting events than Black Storm Rising. One of the new characters is incredibly original...and funny. One of the characters from book 1...umm, I'll just say that he is the coolest. I don't want to ruin the surprise! There are some great weapons!

As in the first book, Jesus is not left out. On that note, there is a wonderful "speech" near the end of the book that I thought was fantastic. (I've heard that not everyone liked it).

This is one of my favorite books! Trust me, it's worth it.

4.0 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 Stars. All Christian Sci-Fi Should be like This!!!, August 19, 2005
This review is from: When Worlds Rage (Paperback)
Four hundred pages of shear imagination. That is one way to describe Mr. Burton's newest release. The events that take place and situations the characters get themselves into takes a truly active imagination to create. And Mr. Burton does it well.

I must admit that there is so much going on that at times I get lost with the characters. This is not necessarily a bad thing, as it causes me to pay more attention to the story as it unfolds. The character names are all a bit foreign so they demand that you remember each one.

This book held more suspense than the first one, and that is the one thing that I thought the first book in this series lacked. So I am twice as thankful that I read book 2 in the Orianus Creation Series. Shane tells me that book 3 will be out soon and I will be picking that one up immediately and I won't wait so long to read it. I think that I need to retain the info from book 2 to be held over into book 3.

Well done Shane. Keep pumping them out. As I have said before, you are a writing machine!

If you like Sci-Fi and want a solid Christian message, pick up this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Story Continues, April 4, 2005
This review is from: When Worlds Rage (Paperback)
This book is one of the best books I've read this past year. Thanks to the author who after 15 years has got me interested in Science Fiction again. While I enjoyed Black Storm Rising almost as much, WWR didn't need to spend the time setting up the story and characters for the reader. That part was already done for the most part and so the story really took flight. In some series I find myself a bit bored with the beginnings of each subsequent book as the author reacquaints you with the storyline. I did NOT find that happening with WWR at all. The story continued in a way that grabbed my attention right away and kept it until the end. The glossary at the back of the book was a great help in remembering characters and terminology from the first book. This is a great read. My only regret is that I've started the series before the author has finished it and now have to wait for each book in the series to be published. I can't wait to see what happens next. When will that be???

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating!, September 28, 2004
This review is from: When Worlds Rage (Paperback)
If you haven't read Black Storm Rising go back and do so now!! When Worlds Rage is even better so you have alot to look forward to reading! This book is interesting, thought provoking and makes you look forward to the next chapter to find out what is going to happen next.

I told Shane this and I'll say it here. A good book to me does 3 things: makes me laugh out loud, makes me really cry and makes me sad when I'm finished because I want to read more. Both of Shane's books meet this requirement!

The gospel message is woven beautifully into the story and the war that we witness between good and evil. I love how Shane tells the gospel message -it really touched my soul. The way he portrays the angels and demons is very intriguing.

I highly recommend this book ....God has blessed Shane with a gift and I hope you will time the time to enjoy his writings as I have done.

Looking forward to the next book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Easier to follow than the first, September 14, 2004
This review is from: When Worlds Rage (Paperback)
I must say, compared to the first book, this book was easier to follow. Not all of the characters involved in the first book were written into this story. They may have had a scene or two, but not important to the storyline at all. For the most part, this book revolved around a certain group of persons.

With several old characters taking a backseat, some new characters were introduced. Ook and the Digital Widgets being my favorites. Though new characters were introduced, it didn't make it hard to follow still.

Shane continued to boldly state through his characters that Jesus was The Way, The Truth, and The Life and once again hit on several things going on in the world today from a biblical point of view.

The reaction from a certain Dwarven character after something had been read was great. In my honest opinion, it is related to how people can be today. Some people, of course. As it is clearly shown in this book, some people can surrender what they believe when something is proven, while others remain to disbelieve the truth.

I think the big climax to this book was much more intense than in book one, Black Storm Rising. This one TOTALLY got me interested, I almost didn't want to put it down at parts. I'd be like, "Okay, I'll stop after this scene...... okay... this scene..."

Those were the excellent parts of the book. There was one thing I remember reading towards the end of the book that I didn't agree with. Not totally sure if that was just the character speaking through his experience or if Shane believed it himself. See, I know how to separate author and character, being a writer myself.

The book continues to follow the whole "god-like" point of view. The narrator knows everything, jumping from one group of people to the other. And another. And back. It sometimes makes it hard to really get inside the head of the characters and what they're feeling when we're constantly jumping from one to another. Not to mention sometimes rather challenging trying to remember the races certain people's names belonged to. Several times I just continued to read, not fully knowing who was who.

And this book didn't seem to end as conclusively as the first book. The first book could be considered one book (which it is, obviously), but this book - though longer - didn't seem to end complete.

Now I'm reeeeeeeeaaally anticipating the third book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Get Ready For A Wild Ride., August 22, 2006
This review is from: When Worlds Rage (Paperback)
Ok folks, hold onto your hats as the occupants of Kerron's Memory might say, characters you will meet in this wonderful novel. The landscapes, worlds, and characters you met in Volume 1, Black Storm Rising, are greatly expanded upon in this second of the Orianus Creation Series. New civilizations are introduced and new friends and foes are woven into this facinating epic. Mr. Burton leads the reader down an ever changing path of intrigue, battles, surprising twist, and planetary conflicts. The story also is a balanced mix of Fantasy and SciFi, with just enough of each to keep fans of both categories happy. It was a most enjoyable and wild ride. Thanks Shane Burton. I can't wait to see what awaits in Volume 3.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping tale with Jesus at its core, August 14, 2006
By
This review is from: When Worlds Rage (Paperback)
I thoroughly enjoyed "When Worlds Rage" which is Book Two in D. Shane Burton's Orianus Creation Series. I had enjoyed Book One ("Black Storm Rising") and wondered if book Two would be as good. It ended up being better.

The plot is well-woven, with each strand contributing to the beautiful whole. Battle scenes and tales of love are equally well-written, maintaining a balance that thrills this reader.

I rejoiced seeing the continuing stories of well-loved characters, while at the same time I was fascinated by meeting new characters along the way.

While the story is fiction, it clearly embraces the Truth embodied in Jesus Christ. I applaud D. Shane Burton for giving us this gripping tale with Jesus at its core.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even better than the first one..., November 8, 2005
This review is from: When Worlds Rage (Paperback)
If you liked the first book (Black Storm Rising), you'll also like this. If you haven't read it, I'd recommend reading it first. When Worlds Rage can be read for itself, but most of the characters are presented in the first book. (The appendix is a great help, refreshing the characters and words from the first book).

Although this is a sequel, it goes far beyond the story of Black Storm Rising, not only in the conflict portrayed, it's also much better. It's style is still much like the BSR, a good mix of sci-fi and fantasy, and a really good portrayal of the spiritual realm much unlike anything I have read before.

You thought Lord Daroth was a villain, but in WWR a people much older, more advanced is taking the role as the chief bad-guy-character. And, to say the least, it's getting quite interesting at some points. An old war is reinvoked, some supposed friends turn their backs on the truth and fight against the good guys, new allies are found and meanwhile, the characters also have their own personal problems to fight.

The author proffesionally jumps from place to place, making it flow naturally, although there are more main characters than in most other novels. This is in no way a bad thing, though, but it requires you to be awake when you read the first couple of chapters. It's a really nice touch, making the book different from other ones.

I'm anxiously awaiting the mailman to bring me #3...

PS: In these times where everyone gives 5 stars for everything, and 4 has become a mediocre rating, it is hard to know when a book is *really* good. This one is. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent follow-up to BSR!, February 16, 2007
By
RevZeek (Charleston, SC USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: When Worlds Rage (Paperback)
When Worlds Rage, D. Shane Burton's second book in the Orianus Creation Series was an outstanding second novel for the author. The originality and action from the first novel remained strongly intact. In fact, this work offered even more suspense and action than the first. I found myself honestly intrigued as to how the characters would get themselves out of their latest predicament and then extremely happy that the outcome was nothing that I could've predicted. One of the reasons I love these books is because the author has managed to take a fictional world and make it completely believable.
I'd also like to point out, in a world of books with cookie-cutter characters and oh-so-predictable plot lines; I congratulate Mr. Burton for writing from his heart instead of conforming to current literary fads. This and the other books in the Orianus Creation Series offer characters and plots which require the reader to think, to use their imagination. I give this book a hearty WUGGA!
