In late 1996, numerous books and articles began appearing that highlighted the approach of the year 2000 and its potential effect on computers. The authors and the news media began predicting that the year 2000 would bring on unprecedented catastrophe.
But the year 2000 (Y2K) computer problem has, according to our analysis, been vastly exaggerated.
It also became apparent that authors were copying each other without really understanding the basic principles of the problem they were dealing with.
For example, one "documentary" demonstrated how Y2K will shut dow the national power supply and paralyze the country. Obviously, the writers of the documentary did not understand the details and consequently replaced fact with fiction.
When analyzing the matter, we must let simple logic and common sense guide us.
During my early investigation of the matter, I consulted several computer experts, including my son Joel, who is Systems Manager here at Midnight Call Ministry. We determined that the entire Y2K matter is mostly a "cloud of dust" that will blow away quickly.
For that reason, I determined not to get involved in the issue because "dust clouds" do come--but they disappear quickly depending on from where the wind blows.
However, as time went by, it became quite obvious that we could not sit still and let things take their course. When those, who are computer illiterate, began calling our office and, with trembling voices, asked for our advice regarding the approaching global catastrophe, we felt obligated to respond.
Such requests continually coming to our office let us know that something had to be done.
On one hand, we would have liked to ignore the alarmists and doomsayers. On the other hand, we saw great concern and confusion among many sincere people who wished to know the truth.
What would we tell an elderly lady who fearfully explained that taking money out of the bank and placing it under her pillow causes her to be more fearful and insecure?
"What must I do?" she asked.
How would we answer others concerned about buying survival rations being offered by many organizations, including Christian ministries?
In short, we felt duty-bound to explain these developments and point out the errors of the alarmists, separating facts from fiction. That, fundamentally, is the reason we have written "When Y2K Dies."
"Take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?" The words of Jesus in Matthew 6:31
Arno And Joel Froese examine the complexities relating to the "Y2K" issue, presenting an understandable answer for the last days of this millennium.
"When Y2K Dies" sorts out the conflicting reports presently overwhelming America in the print, radio and TV media. This is the book that separates fact from fiction and shows if, when, and why chaos will make room for order. It documents, in plain, non-technical terms, the potential danger and the available remedy, all relating to Y2K.
