Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Howe, who wrote The Hospital Book, puts the first year of school into a clear context that is at once familiar and reassuring to would-be kindergartners. Using various schools, teachers, classrooms and "other kids," the book addresses notions so simple that some adults would overlook them: who will help children cross streets when their parents aren't around (a safety-patrol guard); how will they know which classroom they're supposed to be in; what will the bathrooms look like; how muchor how littlewill the other kids know. The photographs are suitably straightforward; school still looks like a brand-new experience, but a fun one. For all those normal fears and questions, this book has the answers, and gets them right.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-K-Other than a mention of computers in the classroom, this revised edition of Howe's guide to kindergarten (Knopf, 1986; o.p.) has very few textual changes. The author tells youngsters what school might look like and how they might get there, and describes some of the possible activities. The real value of this update is in Imershein's new full-color photos that dominate each page, bringing the world of school to life for anxious youngsters. Multicultural children are welcomed and taught by both male and female teachers. Smiling, busy kids engaged in many activities portray school as an exciting, interesting, and happy place. Allan Ahlberg's Starting School (Viking, 1988) addresses some of the same issues, but not as admirably as Howe. While the original is adequate, this update is definitely worth purchasing. It's a perfect choice for adults to share with new young students.

More About the Author

James Howe has written more than eighty books in the thirty-plus years he's been writing for young readers. It sometimes confuses people that the author of the humorous Bunnicula series also wrote the dark young adult novel, The Watcher, or such beginning reader series as Pinky and Rex and the E.B. White Read Aloud Award-winning Houndsley and Catina and its sequels. But from the beginning of his career (which came about somewhat by accident after asking himself what kind of vampire a rabbit might make), he has been most interested in letting his imagination take him in whatever direction it cared to. So far, his imagination has led him to picture books, such as I Wish I Were a Butterfly and Brontorina (about a dinosaur who dreams of being a ballerina), mysteries, poetry (in the upcoming Addie on the Inside), and fiction that deals with issues that matter deeply to him. He is especially proud of The Misfits, which inspired national No Name-Calling Week (www.nonamecallingweek.org) and its sequel Totally Joe. He does not know where his imagination will take him in the next thirty-plus years, but he is looking forward to finding out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good way to prepare pre-K kids, July 3, 1997

This review is from: When You Go to Kindergarten (Hardcover)
We got this book from the library, read it every night, renewed it once and finally bought it. It has helped our son start getting ready for kindergarten because it describes what he'll be doing there.

There are lots of photos and text descriptions of things from using the bathroom (whenever you need to) to fire drills and making new friends.

We told the principal at his school about it, and he bought a copy, too.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very nice book, August 23, 2009

My son (5) really responds to books with real children in them. This was a nice read together before he went to school last week. He kept identifying children in the story as "friends" from his preschool. He is still requesting this one at night.
