4.0 out of 5 stars When you were young
I think it's one of the best songs on the cd. Brandon Flowers has lyrics like, "he doesn't look a thing like Jesus", and has a catchy tune with the chorus sounding like U2. If you're willing to spend the $13 for the 3 songs, you'll definately get what you paid for. On this album, they seem to be going in a different direction with their hit song, than their previous...

1.0 out of 5 stars Catchy, but not quality
The Killers with their last album, Hot Fuss, put out marvelous songs which were both pop-laden, and just rich with lyrics and sounds. Their first single off Sam's Town, 'When You Were Young', is different though, because for some reason The Killer's dropped off some of their worth only to scrounge this single up.

All I can say is that I hope 'When You Were...

5.0 out of 5 stars The Killers got it right this time-AWESOME!, April 7, 2007

This review is from: When You Were Young (Audio CD)
This is an absolutely incredible song with great lyrics and rockin' guitar lines. Many people are trying to hard to compare this single and CD with Hot Fuss. There is no comparison, this is way better than anything they have done before. Don't get me wrong, I love Hot Fuss, but The Killers have outdone themselves with this song and the CD Sam's Town. I highly recommend it!!!!!!!!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars B-Side here!, October 10, 2007

This review is from: When You Were Young (Audio CD)
Until November of 2007, this CD is the onlly place you can get the b-side "All The Pretty Faces" (unless you bought "Sam's Town" at Best Buy the week it was released). This is a great song. It will be released on their b-sides album "Sawdust" in November of this year. If you can wait, then buy the B-sides record.

I think this song is an artistic step forward for the band, but a commercial step either backwards or maybe just in place. In other words, not very many people are going to like it, but the ones who do will appreciate it more than Hot Fuss' stuff. Good article on the killers also in RollingStone magazine with Jack Nicholson on the cover.

5.0 out of 5 stars A perfect single, January 19, 2007

If Bruce Springsteen had written a song for The Cars in 1976 and they got the young Billy Joel to guest vocal, this is almost precisely what it would've sounded like. I love it. It strikes the perfect nostalgic note for a song of regret and lost opportunity.

1.0 out of 5 stars Catchy, but not quality, February 7, 2007
This review is from: When You Were Young (Audio CD)
The Killers with their last album, Hot Fuss, put out marvelous songs which were both pop-laden, and just rich with lyrics and sounds. Their first single off Sam's Town, 'When You Were Young', is different though, because for some reason The Killer's dropped off some of their worth only to scrounge this single up.

All I can say is that I hope 'When You Were Young' returns to antiquity, and here's why. The Killers may have experimented a bit, yes it shows and that's good to try, but having a falsetto chorus line just to have one is a) unnecessary, and b) just degrading what this song could have been.

Then again, this is not the only flaw, as their usually humorous/witty lyrics take a downfall, particularly with this phrase, "he doesn't look a thing like Jesus, but he talks like a gentlemen, like you remember when you're" and then enters the chorus.

My problem is honestly, looks like Jesus? Was Brandon just down and out and couldn't remember maybe some other person to reference?

I guess all I can say is that thankfully I don't believe this song reflects the rest of the Sam's Towns worth, as I have a great appreciation for another single off the new album, and that's 'Bones'. A song which, unlike 'When You Were Young' actually holds wait. (Better luck next time I guess...)
