This review is from: When You're Smiling (Audio CD)
Two Great Singers Together!! Judy Garland and Bing Crosby are both Brilliant Singers! Their duets together can only be described as Fantastic and something it seems that only the heavens could have thought of in blending these two Consummate Singers Voice's together!! Bing was at the very top of his form as far as in his Vocal Quality! And Judy's Concert Style Voice was already being developed when they recorded these originally Live Radio Broadcasts!! Two Wonderful Singers in their prime, who could ask for anything more??
This CD includes a compilation of songs that Judy Garland sang with Bing Crosby on his late 40's and Very Early 50's Radio Shows in which she made frequent Guest Appearances... In fact, the Great Radio Appearances Judy made in the early 50's singing with Bing and Show Stopping Solo Numbers Judy also Performed on Bing's Radio Show which are included as well on this Great CD, is what gave Producer Sid Luft (Judy's Husband) the idea of starring his very talented wife Judy Garland in One Woman Concerts!! So these Radio Appearances by Judy after she had just recently been dismissed from her Movie Musical Days at the MGM Studios was what kicked off Judy's Second Career as a Very Successful Concert Artist. Alot of Judy's Solo Signature Songs are also included on this CD, as well as some Rare Songs which Judy Masters as only Judy Can!!! My very favorite among the Rare Numbers that Judy Garland Performs Solo on this CD, is a song entitled, "You Belong To Me" She gives her Emotional 'ALL' to this particular song!! Judy also sings an Adult Version of her very famous song, "You Made Me Love You" which the Live Audience's Applause and many Excited Whistles of admiration at the end of this number- says it all!! I believe this is the only time Judy Sang the Adult Version of this song entitled, "You Made Me Love You" She also does a Different Version of her Famous Concert Tune entitled, "When You're Smiling" which is great fun to hear! And Judy does a rather Rousing Solo Performance of "Alexander's Ragtime Band" which I for one feel is her Best Performance Ever of this Great Song... My favorite musical song picks on this CD that Judy & Bing Perform Together are as follows: "How Could You Believe Me When I Said I Love You When You Know I've Been A Liar All My Life" Which is an amusing tongue and cheek type of song done expertly by both Judy & Bing! Another Duet Number I really liked is "Hello Ma Baby" Also- an often time Comedic Medley which includes songs entitled, "Boise, Idaho" "Blue Boy" and "These Lush Moments" Judy Garland & Bing Crosby's timing together when performing these Song Numbers is Excellent!! And they both have such feeling and personality in their voices that all the wonderful songs on this CD are a Great Pleasure to the Ears!!! Another duet song number that Judy & Bing do particularly well together, is the rather Beautiful Tune entitled, "April In Paris" and you can really hear Judy's Powerful Concert Voice during her part in this Great Number!!! The only complaint I have about this particular song, is that it was much too short! Of Course, the absolutely Crowning Moment of this CD, is when Judy performs her endearing last Musical Number which is her song, and her's alone--"Somewhere Over The Rainbow" It's so interesting to hear when she sings this Wonderful Song, the Young Judy Garland Voice blending in with the more Mature Judy Garland Voice as she performs this Terrific Number on this Live Radio Show!! It is Simply Magical!!! This is an Incredible CD of songs, and if you don't have this very entertaining CD in your collection as yet, you're truly missing out on a Very Pivotal Chapter of Judy Garland's Great Career!!! I personally had a smile on my face all through the Great Song Numbers that were so generously included on this 'One of a Kind' 35 Song Set CD!

This budget CD pulls together 12 live tracks from Judy Garland's 1963-64 television series; while there are certainly better CDs out there, this would make a great introduction to Judy Garland for those yet to fall under her spell. The music here is rather scattered in style, the up side of which is the fact that it allows the listener to get an intimate feel for several facets of Judy's incredible personality and singing style. Judy gives a rousing rendition of I'm Nobody's Baby, a song she first sang as a teenager in the excellent film Andy Hardy Meets Debutante; it's a true joy to hear the mature Garland reinterpret this truly magical song for her audience. The raw power of Judy's unique voice is made manifest in a somewhat unfamiliar Through the Years, the sound quality of which leaves something to be desired, unfortunately. The words "Smile though your heart is aching" take on a very personal meaning when Judy sings them, as anyone familiar with her life knows, and this fact makes Smile an incredible song of triumph over adversity that never fails to inspire me. Its corollary song, When You're Smiling (The Whole World Smiles With You) is taken in the same vein by this devoted fan of the greatest singer to ever live. You may stop automatically associating the name of Andy Williams with the song Moon River after you hear Judy's soulful rendition of this classic American standard, as it is absolutely beautiful. You get two fan favorites, Chicago and San Francisco, back to back here. Judy always knocked her audiences dead with each of these tunes, and she obviously takes great joy in delivering these crowd-pleasing performances - it is always good to see Judy Garland happy, and it sometimes seems as if the only place she could ever truly be happy was on stage in front of her adoring fans. Lost in the Stars is a marvelous example of Judy Garland making a song outside her natural niche entirely her own; other great singers have performed this number, but few have equaled the power of Garland's performance. Those who might say Judy did not know how to let her hair down should listen to the medley If I Had a Talking Picture Of You/Toot Toot Tootsie. Lucky Day is a theme song of sorts for The Judy Garland Show, and this track opens with the narrated introduction of Judy to the audience. The mood of the album takes a somber turn with Judy's moving rendition of By Myself; if anyone were qualified to sing this song, that person was Judy, and without doubt no one brought more emotion and power to this great track than she did. The album closes out with a show-stopper sung by many vocalists but truly mastered by Judy Garland; Rock-A-Bye Your Baby With a Dixie Melody leaves you literally begging for more. This may be a budget CD, but this is A-plus musical material. |
