4.0 out of 5 stars ringing brit pop rules, November 24, 2004
This review is from: Whenever You're Ready (Audio CD)
Flop play rock that brings to mind brit pop, such as Stone Roses and the La's. Guitars fuzz and buzz with a lot of distortion. The vocals are similiar to the bands i mentioned above and also Oasis, the Bennets and Blur. The drumming and bass are pounding and really drive the beat along. All in all this is a very exciting cd to listen to and I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys the bands I have already mentioned and similiar bands

3.0 out of 5 stars Didn't quite live up to the "Hype!", March 13, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Whenever You're Ready (Audio CD)
I was first introduced to Flop in the documentary "Hype!", which shows Flop recording the song "Julie Francavilla". This song is so amazingly catchy that I went out and bought the Hype! Soundtrack, and after weeks of searching I found a used copy of "Whenever You're Ready". I was hoping for more short, punchy, melodic songs like "Julie Francavilla", but didn't really find them. One problem with this album is that Rusty's voice seems to be overproduced. In some songs they use an effect to sweeten his voice, but I actually like his raspy, natural voice much better. Another thing that caught me offguard with this album is that the chord progressions never go where you expect them to. This tends to work both for them and against them. It works great in songs like Woolworth, where they switch from a minor to a major key in the song. But then you've got a song like Regrets. It starts off with a catchy, melodic chord progession, and then they break into a dark, metal-sounding riff, which I didn't really like. Overall I thought the album was just ok. If you're looking for more short, catchy punk songs like "Julie Francavilla" you can find them on "Fall of the Mopsqueezer".

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best of 1993, May 22, 2003
This review is from: Whenever You're Ready (Audio CD)
Ahhh, my freshman year in college. An introduction to Servedriver, Velocity Girl, 13 Engines, etc and of course, FLOP. This album turned out to be one of the real sweethearts of my deck. It's a true american original. The album can be incredibly soupy at times but A Wylie, Julie Francavilla, Parts I & II, The Great Valediction and Mendel's White Trash Laboratory make it all worth while. It's a no frills, no filler album and really stands up well over ten years after it's release. The poppy sounds avoided the pop punk scene and it probably stands best beside the emo of the time (Jawbox et al, not the pop-punk cum emo of today). The tempo and strange structure shifts enhance the album and ensure that there is always more to hear with each listen.
