5.0 out of 5 stars I love this book, August 26, 2011
I have a copy of this book in paperback; it is old, yellowed and still one of my favorite novels of all times. I never laughed so hard as my first reading, and still laugh every time I pick it up.

I can't see the word "ointment" in print without thinking of this book!

This is one of the books in my personal collection I would never lend out; I was always concerned I not be able to find a replacement.

A great read, very entertaining. I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Axelrod's Underdog Hero, August 25, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
George Axelrod's career was full of successes and even bigger successes, but for some reason, the novel he penned in 1970 was never judged to be one of them. This story of a hapless middle-aged writer longing to get out of his marriage and finally meeting his life-long fantasy of a long-legged blonde, resonates with every Playboy-reading guy that ever came home to the same lady every day. Good things happen to Axelrod's "everyman" along the way, and you almost find yourself looking for the words "I never thought these stories were true..."

"Where am I now - When I need me?" is highly recommended, not just for the humor (or the sex, which in 1970, was considered near-porn, while now it's just ho-hum) but for the slice of late 1960s culture, which most of us are too young to remember and the rest of us are sadly forgetting. It's a world of non-PC. Women, cigarettes, racial differences... it almost is like reading Dickens, it is so out-dated!

Get the book, read the book. If you are a fan of Axelrod's masterworks, "The Seven Year Itch" and "Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?" you are guaranteed a good time.
