Book Description

True and Complete Edition: A wonderful story of questioning, disillusionment, and conversion. It tells the story of a prim English family's encounter with the foreign land of Italy. When attractive, impulsive English widow Lilia marries Gino, a dashing and highly unsuitable Italian 12 years her junior, her snobbish former in-laws make no attempt to hide their disapproval. But their expedition to face the uncouth foreigner takes an unexpected turn when they return to Italy under tragic circumstances intending to rescue Lilia and Gino's baby. Forster displays his finely honed talent for using the tragi-comic incident to comment on human existence. Where Angels Fear To Tread is much more than a comedy of manners - it demonstrates how a clash of cultural sensibilities can quickly turn from comedy to tragedy. This is a classic to come and read again and again. A superb book that you will remember long after you read it. Making your own discovery of Angels is part of the attraction.

About the Author

Edward Morgan Forster OM, CH (1 January 1879 - 7 June 1970), was an English novelist, short story writer, essayist and librettist. He is known best for his ironic and well-plotted novels examining class difference and hypocrisy and also the attitudes towards gender in early 20th-century British society. Forster's humanistic impulse toward understanding and sympathy may be aptly summed up in the epigraph to his 1910 novel Howards End: "Only connect".

5.0 out of 5 stars One of Forster's best!, September 14, 2009
This review is from: Where Angels Fear To Tread (Paperback)
We have all heard the expression, and know what it means. Love: where angels fear to tread.

Forster can really turn a phrase, and he did so here in one of his best novels, and most loved. The clash of cultures was one of Forster's favorite settings for his human comedies. And what can be more different, the stiff English vs the easy and free living Italians?

In this case an upper class English girl goes to Italy, marries and is pregnant. WOW! Her parents then find her husband has died and must 'rescue' her from the uncouth but loving Italians.

That is the star of the story, and as good as that plot is, its the beauty of the writing that makes this a classic that needs to be read at lease once or twice!

Listen to Forster's words, and see if you don't need to think about your own life too.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a charming edition, and well recommended, a book that you must read!, September 8, 2009
This review is from: Where Angels Fear To Tread (Paperback)
One of the most popular of Forster's novels and it's easy to see why. In this, his first book, Forster shows a subtlety and attention to detail and dialogue which will capture you. He makes superb use of the Italian settings and of Italian art, bringing them to life vividly, undermining tourist clichés, and weaving them gracefully into his main themes, on the surface cultural differences, and underneath, the contrast of the British `stiff upper lip' character vs. the Italian `go with the flow' lifestyle.

Factor in great writing, and you will enjoy how Foster can interweave romanticism and irony so well.

This is a charming edition, and well recommended, a book that you must read!
