Book Description

Hope fills the boundless heart of a little girl, Patty, in this true-life quest for happiness destined to grip the imaginations of “young and old” alike. Growing up in cars and a pickup truck plus trailers and countless motels in the 1940s through 1960s, the child visits a meadow where she befriends hundreds of magpies. Soon afterward, quite by accident, the girl meets sex symbol Marilyn Monroe. From that day forward, Patty sets her sights on living someday in a beautiful home with a white picket fence. Join Patty on her unforgettable journey deep into the back-roads of the American West. Follow her struggle to cope while attending countless public schools, the beginning of a life-long plan to excel in the arts. As the magpies gradually disappear, a fatal automobile crash changes the course of Patty’s life. There are no accidents.

5.0 out of 5 stars This should be a runaway bestseller May 7, 2012
Format:Paperback
"Wow" is the best word to describe my experience reading this fascinating book, which surely would emerge as a runaway bestseller if the author was already a big-name celebrity or a "known" hot-selling writer. For me, this quickly emerged as a fast page-turner from beginning to end, a surprise at every twist and turn. The historical aspects gave me the most delight. After finishing Patty's story, I told my husband. He started reading, thinking at first that it was going to be a flowery "girl" book but soon agreed with me. Surprisingly, my man found plenty of "guy stuff" in the tale to keep him glued to Patty's tale. He spent all his available time throughout the past weekend reading this, calling the story "the best read I have had in a long time." Now, our 15-year-old daughter is enjoying Magpie as well. Bravo.

5.0 out of 5 stars delightful window into Patty Melton's heart April 22, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
LOVE LOVE LOVE ms melton's book. Captured at the onset, first my 95 year old father snagged and read the entire book in 2 days. He kept telling me excerpts he enjoyed and I was anxious to read it myself. Enjoy it, I did. From first childhood feelings and memories right on down memory lane to adulthood, it was delightful.

Not being a native to northern nevada, I was pleased to read local history, Patty's personal experiences in Reno and surrounding sites and a much deeper travel into her love for Reno.

Patty took me on a journey through her heart and soul causing feelings of BEING THERE with her. A little girl growing up as she wrote and recounted love of family, friends and Reno. I'll read it again, so much to enjoy.

3.0 out of 5 stars TMI (Too Much Information) April 6, 2012
By Magpie
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
There was a lot of good historical information; ie time, places and names. But the beginning half of the book seemed to be written by a child (childish)and not good continuity. The second half was inspiring at times but seemed so focused on the author's achievements over obstacles that it became too much personal information. And where was the brother's place in this family and her "world"? It was as if only she and her parents and grandparents existed. The title of the book was not a clear indication of the intended story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully Written May 4, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I found the story of Patty's life growing up and contributing in later years to the Reno community to be fascinating. This book is eloquently written and Patty is open and honest about her own experiences and feelings. As a Reno resident I found it very interesting to hear her reflections on the history of the people and places, some of which I am familiar and much I didn't know as it was before my time living here. Over all I think whether you know Patty or Reno you will find it an engaging read.
