More About the Author

Check out my newest book WIGGLE YOUR TOES! A Book to pull, fluff, and wiggle!

I have always been interested in folk art from around the world, Indian miniatures, Mexican ceramics, fabrics, Chagall, Matisse, children's art, and primitive painting, and I love to paint and experiment with pattern, texture, collage and color. The careers I've had--as a costume designer, a quilt maker, a fabric artist, and a graphic designer--have taken all these interests into account. Looking back, I can see that these passions and career choices have played a large part in influencing me to become a children's book author and illustrator.

But most importantly, it was after my husband and I adopted our daughter from Guatemala that I was inspired to do a children's book for her. My first book, Over the Moon, was the story of that magical experience of welcoming our daughter Lena into our lives. I painted, I drew, I collaged, and I wrote, and after working very hard... a beautiful book was born! Twenty-two books later, my daughter--now fourteen years old--still is an inspiration for me.

I am fascinated by babies and little kids. The simplest words and gestures can make them laugh. Sometimes standing in line at the supermarket and watching kids in grocery carts, my best ideas are born.

I am fascinated by people from all over the world and what they look like and how they live and the differences that make us all unique.

When an idea pops into my head I ask these questions:
Will a child want to read this book?
Will a parent want to read this book with their child?
Will this book make a parent and child feel something?
Is there something visual here that will hold a child's interest?
Will a child see something in a different way after reading this book?
If the answer is yes, then I know I'm on the right track.

I am very lucky to get to do what I do. Everyday I go into my studio and have fun. Don't get me wrong, some days are very frustrating. Sometimes the colors are all wrong and the words don't sound right. But after I work at it for a while...and try to do it a different way...and think...and change the words or colors...and try some more...suddenly, there it is--a great page of writing, or a great illustration. And nothing is more satisfying than that.

Like many other Karen Katz flap books, this book features a baby looking for something, in this case her puppy. She goes around the house and yard asking is my puppy under the shower curtain? is my puppy in the garbage can?, etc, and then your child can lift the flap on the page to find out. All of the objects found in this book are animals, including a kitty, turtle, fish and squirrel. Like the other Karen Katz flap books, the flaps are not full page, but are shaped like the item illustrated on them (shower curtain, garbage can, etc). This is nice, but makes them not quite as sturdy as some other flap books, since baby doesn't always know which direction they open (some from side, some from top, etc) and the flaps can get ripped off sometimes. Not a big deal for us since they go back on fairly nicely with tape. This book is good for babies who like animals, and my daughter does like it, but I think her favorites are the ones where she can point to body parts (Where is Baby's Belly Button? is one of them) and also the Where is Baby's pumpkin?, which we read year round since it has both flaps and a fuzzy texture on most pages. But pretty much all of the Karen Katz books are a hit with toddlers and this is no exception.

This is one of the usual Karen Katz books. My daughter enjoys it. She likes puppies and opening the flaps with "surprizes" underneath.

This book is wonderful. Our daughter liked it at 9 months, and at the age of 2 she still does. This is by far her favorite Karen Katz book! It is one of the books she always grabs from the little table beside her bed to "read" on her own in bed in the mornings.

Pros:
- Very educational: many words to learn, very colorful, a very happy book (thus making learning easy!), lift-the-flaps make reading very interactive which is beneficial for learning.
- Even easier as a starter book than other Karen Katz books (like "Where is baby's belly button?").
- Great drawings.
- Sturdy enough for enthusiastic little toddler hands.

Cons:
- None.

What is it about flaps that fascinate? My almost 3-year-old grandson adores this book and is reading it on his own. The colorful pictures are engaging and create practical context clues to help an early reader decode. The vocabulary is fun to say: "swishy goldfish," "furry squirrel." My 6-month old grandson squeals at the colorful images. Most of the sturdy flaps are about the size of a third of the page (or more), making them easy to grab. I have several Karen Katz flap books and none of the flaps has torn, something I assumed would happen when I purchased the first one several years ago. Put this on your book shelf and expect it to become a family favorite.

We wanted our daughter to develop a healthy love of reading as early as possible (well, not actual reading yet, but to enjoy books) and the first time I ordered her a Karen Katz book I knew we had hit paydirt. Every book is full of activity (lift the flap usually but sometimes pop-up or sliding features) The storylines are usually similar (Where is Baby's....) and then baby searches under and around about 8 pages to find the subject. Very fun for older babies. I recommend all of her books except the Princess one (see my review, but again, that is just me)

My son loves these lift-the-flap books! I decided to buy him a few for his birthday and he still enjoys reading them every day. This particular title wasn't his favorite but the books are great and I would recommend them to any one buying books for a child under 4. I'd recommend reading these books to a child even before age 1 because it encourages them to flip the pages and interact with the story.

The condition was perfect! I'm very pleased with this book.

Our 10-month-old daughter loves all of the Karen Katz lift-the-flap books. This one is really cute, with lots of different cute animals throughout, that follow Baby from one page to the next as she looks for her puppy. My daughter LOVES to pull up the flaps herself, and she'll often "read" them on her own. She has managed to pull off some of the flaps, so we do have to keep an eye on her!
