Book Description

February 28, 1998 2 and upHarper Growing Tree
HarperCollins Children's Books is delighted to introduce Harper Growing Tree, a new line of quality books for babies and toddlers, from birth to three years. In the tradition of Goodnight Moon, and The Runaway Bunny, these books offer literature for the youngest child, language-rich stories, songs, and poems, paired with beautiful accessible art. Studies have shown that the first three years of life are the most active period of language development. Babies respond immediately to rhythm, rhyme and repetition. Toddlers love stories and verse and music. Each animal has its own ritual as it settles down to sleep each night. This gentle, rhythmic poem, will become a satisfying addition to every child's bedtime routine.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSAA newly illustrated version of a 1970 title. While this bedtime story opens in a fairly humdrum manner with a pat, predictable rhyme, the rhyming scheme quickly changes and continues to expand as readers ponder the growing repertoire of animals and their sleeping places. Predictably, a child is described at the end, but the text is so soothing and complete that any sense of "I've seen this before" is forgiven. The illustrations add considerably to the success of this title. Each focused watercolor emanates serenity and warmth. Most pictures are presented in cozy circles with the outer edges gently fading to white. They bring the poem full circle by showing the bear and her cub nestled lovingly together on the last page. These features combine with a handwritten text printed in soft blue to provide toddlers with a reassuring listening experience.AMartha Topol, Traverse Area District Library, Traverse City, MI

This charming book, with beautiful illustrations and lyrical text, takes you through a series of animals and where they sleep, ending with "Lucky you! You lay your head on a pillow soft...with someone who loves you to kiss you good night." It is sure to lull your child into sleepiness ready for bed, and you won't get tired of reading it either.

5.0 out of 5 stars Where do Bears Sleep?, June 15, 2009

This review is from: Where Do Bears Sleep? (Harper Growing Tree) (Hardcover)
This is a great story book for bedtime. It is revised from the original "boy" version I read my daughter some 30 years ago. We bought this for my new grand daughter and it brought back some great memories. It is THE favorite bedtime story from my daughter's childhood. She remembers me crossing out the word "boy" on the original version and writing in "girl", so this revision is a good one. The pictures are great! I still have her original book but did not want to part with it.
