Book Description

6 and up
Shows how all food--grains, vegetables, fruits, and dairy and meat products--begins on the farm as sun, earth, air, and water combine to grow plants.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-4-- Patent gives clear, straightforward descriptions of the different categories of food--grains, fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy products, and eggs. She begins by explaining in basic terms how plants use and store energy. Brief discussion on a variety of topics follows: the difference between white and brown rice, which flowers we eat (broccoli and cauliflower), how cream is formed, why some fruits are seedless. Information is greatly enhanced by Munoz's many appealing, full-color photographs. Included are illustrated directions for making yogurt, as well as photos of groups of packaged foods with which children may be familiar. Broader in scope than many of Millicent Selsam's books, this will fill a need in most collections. --Lee Bock, Brown County Pub . Libraries, Green Bay, WI

From Kirkus Reviews

Beginning at the grocery, where most urban people today get food, Patent discusses the sources of foods that are made into such products as ``Tater Tots,'' ``V-8,'' and ``Uncle Ben's Converted Rice.'' Brief chapters discuss fruits and vegetables, grains, meats, and dairy products. Color photos contrast the various states: one spread includes shots of an appealing ``beef cow'' in a pasture, fresh cuts of meat, and a selection of processed beef products (e.g., Knox gelatine). Not about nutrition, but a useful awareness-builder. (Nonfiction. 8-11) -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.
