These scores, and the Movies have always been great favorites of mine. In Where Eagles Dare you have a Movie which moves along at a tremendous pace, and, just when you think you can pause for breath, it starts all over again. The score, very well played, is just terrific. The opening scenes are electrifying, from the pppp of a snare drum to the crescendo leading to the movie titles is amazing. There are several versions of the score, but none as complete, or well played as this. The original LP of the score, is much shorter and sounds very different. It probably should as I believe the LP is a studio performance, whereas this 2 CD set is taken from the sound track, and very well taken too.
Operation Crossbow is not quite as memorable, but nevertheless is compelling in its own right. Again well played and recorded. I have had these CD's for about 2 years now, and am most pleased with my purchase. Both movies are available on DVD, and both were eagerly awaited. If you know the music, then these CD's are well worth owning. Ron Goodwin was a great movie score composer, listen also to 633 Squadron.

WHERE EAGLES DARE / OPERATION CROSSBOW (2 CD Set!) [Soundtrack]

Great music from two of my all-time favorite war movies. A little on the expensive side, but in my opinion,worth it. Most enjoyable.

Ron Goodwin created a masterpiece with his composition for the score of Where Eagles Dare. Though I still feel that Jerry Goldsmith's score from Patton is still the iconic WWII movie theme, Goodwin's comes in a close second-place.

To begin with, Where Eagles Dare was an excellent book which was made into a classic movie. Goodwin's unforgettable score augmented an already terrific movie the way all great musical scores do. Not only did Goodwin's composition rachet-up the suspense in a number of scenes, but it added to the heart-pounding action throughout the film.

This was one of the few soundtrack purchases I have made in which I liked well over 75% of the recordings. For its merits, this soundtrack stands alone beautifully -- mind you, it's a great movie as well, if you have not had occasion to see it yet.
