Book Description

June 1, 1997
Death doesn't take a holiday -- even when Tamara does.

Off to sunny Kingston, Jamaica, for some much needed relaxation, former Newark cop and hard-working p.i. Tamara Hayle is pleased at first to join fellow Jersey homegirl, Lilah Love, for a night on the town. But with Lilah's abusive husband and his friend Delaware Brown along, the evening starts out bad and gets much worse -- especially when, after a blackout, the lights come abruptly up on a fresh corpse, a murder weapon with Tamara's fingerprints all over it, and two missing companions who have vanished with her money and identification.

Now Tamara's at risk in a strange place far from home. She's already lost paradise. And with death heading her way again, she's about to lose a lot more -- unless she can stop a killer before the killer stops her.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Is there room for another tough, street smart, sharp-talking female private eye in your heart or on your bookshelf? Her third adventure, now available in paperback, proves that former Newark, New Jersey, cop Tamara Hayle can hold her own with anyone else on the overcrowded scene. Paid off on her last case with a plane ticket to Jamaica, Hayle takes a much-needed break from the life of a hardworking single mom, only to find herself knee deep in the same kind of blood and crud she has to deal with back home. Previous books in the lively series are Devil's Gonna Get Him and When Death Comes Stealing.

From Publishers Weekly

Newark PI Tamara Hayle, last seen in Devil's Gonna Get Him, narrowly survives her Kingston, Jamaica, vacation despite her dangerous propensity for talking to strangers. Tamara only reluctantly accompanies giggly fellow tourist Lilah Love to a seedy bar with Lilah's husband, Sammy Lee, and a friend, Delaware Brown. There, after punks kill the lights, Sammy Lee and another man are murdered, and Tamara's bag, with credit cards and passport, is stolen. Basil Dupre, a "naughty delight" from Tamara's past, shows up and whisks her off to safety. Then Lilah appears and convinces Tamara to help her search for Lilah's share of a bundle of money, which, along with Tamara's bag, is in Delaware's rooms. Once there, Lilah promptly scoots, leaving Tamara to discover Delaware's bludgeoned corpse but, alas, not her passport?and without it she's trapped in a week of sun and fun so violent, it takes even more deaths to extricate her.

2.0 out of 5 stars This book is very slow., September 2, 1998

This review is from: Where Evil Sleeps (Hardcover)
This book is slow and it is not getting to the point fast enough. She is using a lot of words to say nothing. Just like Terry McMillian's How Stella Got Her Groove Back, this book is allowing us to get into Tamara's inner thoughts. Some of her thoughts need not be heard. They are somewhat useless to me. I checked this book out from the library a little over 3 weeks ago and I'm only half way through it. It's just plain boring to me. It is going to take me another 3 weeks to finish it. I was reading other reviews about her other books. I am going to try and give this sister the benefit of the doubt and try to read her other books. If you really want to read good mystery written by an African American women then you should read books written by Eleanor Taylor-Bland, now she's an excellent mystery writer. I am going to finish this book only because a sister wrote it. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book. A powerful twist to the ending. Awesome Writer, February 24, 1998

This review is from: Where Evil Sleeps (Hardcover)
I just loved Tamara Hayle. But it seems she is the poorest PI I have ever read about. She never has money for anything. Anyway, Where Evil Sleeps was very good. I got the book as a Christmas gift and once I got into it, I couldn't put it down. Just when I thought Tammy was going to find out that she was being set-up by those druggies, she had no clue what was going on. As I read the part about her searching for the money with that stupid girl, I just knew that Tammy was going to figure out she was being set-up. Basil Dupre is my man. He always seems to appear just in the nick of time to save Tammy's butt. They really just ought to get together at least throughout one book. Anyway, the book was really awesome. I can't wait to read the next book. It sounds familiar. The beginning starts out with Tammy about to get car-jacked. I swear the same thing happened to me just before Thanksgiving. I was just as calm and collective as Tammy. Then when it really hit me what had just happened, I almost collapsed. The thief got away with my car, but I got it back within three days. I could swear I knew the kid. Anyway, Valerie, you go girl. Love your books, read all of them. Keep up the good work!!!!!
