Book Description

March 15, 2005 0967525942 978-0967525945
Plus-sized actress Giletta Montrose is thrilled when she lands a gig to host a new reality show called Where Fat Girls Haven't Gone. While enjoying the show's weekly stunts such as kayaking around the New York Harbor, starring in a music video and playing competitive sports, Giletta learns to navigate the broad egos, intricate politics and false friendships she encounters. Ecstatic to finally be in front of the camera, Giletta is not as surprised as everyone else when the show becomes a hit. But with success lighting her path, she can no longer ignore her dream to grace the boards of Broadway and must choose between following her heart or her bank account.

Editorial Reviews

Review

I really enjoyed getting to know Giletta and Madison. They made me laugh and they made me reflect. I could relate to pieces of each of them. It was easy to be drawn into their daily lives which included work, friendships, and family complications. I enjoyed it and recommend checking it out. --M.E. Wood - Bella Online

I very much enjoyed the heroine's grace under pressure as she does, on national television, so many things that fat girls often postpone doing until some mythical thin future. --Lynne Murray - Bestselling Author

This is an unusual novel. It breaks all the rules about the way characters should look and act. Readers will warm to Giletta right away and will never feel sorry for her. Though uplifting, the conclusion is not what the reader will expect. The story is both funny and touching, with many instances for introspection. Fortunately, the reality-TV angle isn't overdone to the point of becoming boring - just when the reader begins to get tired of it, the plot changes focus. Those who enjoy reading about the entertainment industry will like Where Fat Girls Haven't Gone. Group discussion questions and a resource list are included. --Melissa Parcel - Book Loons

Whether you see yourself as "fat" (and which of us don't at some point of every month?) or not, you will revel in the reality and awe-inspiring gusto with which this book is written!
I couldn't put it down...yep! Read straight through...laughed and cried my big ole butt off! It is possibly better than her first book, "The Fifth Goddess"! (Please note: I said "possibly").She tells it like it is! She lives it like it is, and how I want my life to be! NO FEAR...NO self-imposed LIMITATIONS...just LIVING LIFE TO THE FULLEST! It doesn't matter what physical size you are....this book made me want to be a "FAT GIRL"! A woman who is FULL of life, FILLED with the possiblities and doubts that fill us all...Inspiring and a HUGE reality check for ALL of US! There isn't a person in the world I wouldn't recommend this book to! What a talented author! I can't wait for her next one! YOU ROCK Staci...ROCK ON!

You don't have to be fat to love this book of about finding yourself and standing up to the challenges and judgements of everyday life. I was in tears with laughter at some of the parallels I found in my own life. Read it - you will love it no matter who you are!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fat Girls are strong girls, June 28, 2005

Wow, the pain was layers deep in this book. On the surface, Giletta Montrose is light-hearted and a great sport about her many challenging assignments (as a fat girl) as the star of a reality TV show. As she smiled and breezed her way through life, I felt her pain. Staci Backauskas has a way with the written word - injecting raw emotion and pure pain into every day situations that normal sized women take for granted.

Staci's "easy to get into" writing style...has each chapter beckoning you to read on just a little further until you're so deep into Madison and Gilletta that you just can't put the book down.

I highly recommend this book. And it didn't come packed with the usual "I figured it all out" ending. I was surprised and delighted with the way it all turned out. This was a delightful, inspiring, surprising yet painful story told with grace and a fabulous sense of humor. Another great book by Staci Backauskas. A great read for women of all shapes and sizes.
