I love it that GOLDIE AND THE GINGERBREADS - the first all female ROCK BAND THAT PLAYED THEIR OWN INSTRUMENTS are on the cover of this CD. It contains their version of Mary Wells' " BYE BYE BABY ". Another bonus is the discovery of a rare track that lead singer GOLDIE who is also known as GENYA RAVAN when she left the group is the singer on LOOKING FOR TROUBLE by a group called THE CHARMERS. Must have been one of those studio group names that was custom back then. Being a huge fan, I am happy to have this CD just for those tracks. The rest of the songs offer a lot of fun & listening pleasure as well.

Ace Records, how about a whole CD of GOLDIE AND THE GINGERBREADS? They did many singles in the UK & the US , and you have the group on 3 " WHERE THE GIRLS ARE " compliations. It's time they get their own full album since they started making records in 1964. GENYA RAVAN has since made some solid music since then, and CAROL MACDONALD made some solo albums too. Carol, GINGER BIANCO and MARGO LEWIS all were part of the 70's progressive band, ISIS also. It's time to give these women a full CD of their music after over 40 years.

In common with the other volumes in this series, this collection consists of rare tracks that didn't make any significant impression when they were released and have largely been forgotten. If you are a casual fan of sixties music just looking for hits, you should look elsewhere. You won't find them here. There are a few familiar names here, but their famous songs are not included.

On this collection, the big names are the Shirelles (represented here by an album track and a B-side), the Shangri-Las (represented by an early flop single) and Maxine Brown (represented by songs that became American hits for others - the Essex and the Avons).

Less obviously familiar is Tammy Montgomery who later achieved fame as Marvin Gaye's duet partner before dying aged just 24. You may also recognize the Toys and Goldie and the Gingerbreads. All of these are also represented here by rare tracks.

Mention must also be made of Dianne and Annita, represented here by two tracks, one of which is the original version of A groovy kind of love - perhaps the most familiar song here. This version was only released on a 1965 French EP originally, so they were the first of the three acts to miss a big opportunity. Patti LaBelle was next - her version was released as a B-side (and can be found on volume 4 of this series), while Lesley Gore's management didn't like the song and refused to allow her to record it, although Lesley was keen to. The song finally became a British and American hit the Mindbenders, while Petula Clark had the South African hit.

The overall sound of this collection is early sixties girl-group. If you are already familiar with this type of music and you have a significant collection of such music, you may find this fascinating. If not, you are probably not ready for this.

What a great collection. The Toys, the Teardrops, Goldie and the Gingerbreads. The highlight of this package cd is definately "I've Got A Crush on Teacher" by the Fawns, a legendary 70's girl group best known for "Girl in Trouble" and "Bless You".
