Book Description

August 1, 2005
Where have all the men gone? Faced with 25, 000 more women than men in London, and gleeful media reports that it's statistically more likely for single women to be murdered than get married, Katie is reached an all-time low. But all is not lost ! Another hilarious high-concept romantic comedy from Jenny Colgan. While Katie's glad it's not a man's world any more, she'd be quite pleased if there were more men in it -- or at least single ones, anyway. More likely to get murdered than married, according to gleeful media reports, Katie resigns herself to the fact there's no sex in the city and heads for the hills -- or the Scottish highlands, to be precise. Despite the fact she's never been a girl for wellies -- and Fairlish is in the middle of nowhere -- the tiny town does have one major draw: men. Lots of them. But while Katie relishes the chance to do battle with armies of admirers, she's not reckoned on going head to head with her grumpy new boss, Harry, shadowy developers intent on destroying the beautiful countryside and Mrs McClockerty, the least suitable hotelier since Norman Bates. At least there's the local eye-candy to distract her, including gorgeous newshound Iain. But he is at loggerheads with Harry, and Harry despises her. Life in the country might not be one big roll in the hay but can Katie ever turn her back on the delights of Fairlish and return to city life?

5.0 out of 5 stars Clever and funny chick lit, April 16, 2006
This review is from: Where Have All the Boys Gone (Paperback)
Jenny Colgan is a well known Scottish author of chick lit. she has written many books, all of which are very witty and memorable. "Amanda's Wedding" by Jenny Colgan is a must read.

"Where have all the boys gone" is about not being able to get a decent man in London and then moving up to a remote Scottish village where the men outnumber the women by some staggering statistic. It is basic chick lit, sweet and funny. It has a change of pace where it slows a little in the middle, but picks right up again.

Check out Amazon.co.uk for the full listing of Jenny Colgan's work and more reviews. The British observational style of humor is drier than the American, and I find it works well in this type of book, which otherwise could be come syrupy. However it is a matter of taste. Read one of Jenny Colgan's books, e.g. Amanda's Wedding, and you will be hooked. The trouble is Amazon.com doesn't stock many of her books, but you can order them from amazon.co.uk as I have done.

If enough people request them, I was told that Amazon.com will get the full listing of her books, but also check out ebay and ebay.co.uk. As you can see, I am a total fan of Colgan' work. I've lived in the UK and maybe that is why I am hooked, but even my friends who have never left Texas love them and I practically run a lending library to my friends and family of Colgan's titles. These include:

Amanda's Wedding

Talking to Addison

Looking for Andrew McCarthy

Working Wonders

Do You Remember the First Time?

Postcards From the Hedge

West End Girls

Short stories

Girl's Night In

Tart Noir

Scottish Girls About Town

Guardian Christmas Story
