Membership statistics are not the only challenges facing the churches at this time; spiritual growth is at least as important. An impoverished world in need of bread and the Word claims the attention of the church. Studies in membership gains and losses are only one way to ask the larger questions of meaning, of the bonds between our beliefs and commitments, of the churches in which we serve, and of ourselves, personally before God. This book is divided into two sections: first, a statement of concerns; then, a discussion of responses. In the first part, the three chapters are devoted to the primary causes of dramatic losses in membership in mainline denominations. In the second part, four chapters discuss possible program responses, each progressively more specific. The final chapter offers a summary, review, and suggestions for using this material.
