3.0 out of 5 stars Short and cute
This is the 'lost baby asks other animals where home is' retold in penguin form. I remember a version of this from my childhood with woodland animals, and there seemed to be enough other wildlife where the baby was not asking all its predators "where is home?" In this very lovely illustrated penguin version, baby Pip is asking "where is home?" to which I expected...

"Where is Home, Little Pip?" is a delightful tale about a little boy penguin named Pip who gets lost after chasing after a feather. Trying to find his way home, he meets up with several other animals and asks "Where is Home" Each animal gives a lovely rhyme back describing their home. Pip eventually finds his Mama and Papa. This is one of the most enjoyable childrens book I have read in a long time! Very beautifully illustrated! An interesting and engaging story that will sure to be a favorite at YOUR home!

4.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT SWEET READ FROM ONE OF MY FAVORITE CHILDREN'S AUTHORS, August 31, 2009
This review is from: Where Is Home, Little Pip? (Hardcover)
I have to admit to being a big Karma Wilson fan and love her bear books and the adventures of the little mouse Mortimer. While this work of the baby penguin Pip is good, it did not seem to me to have the same flair as previous works by this author. Now don't take me wrong. Had I read this one first, I would have been absolutely completely satisfied, but with knowledge of what this author is capable of, I was just a wee bit disappointed.

Pip is a little penguin living with her mother and father in a very cold place as is the nature of penguins to do. She and her parents make up a happy family and have a happy home. One day, while her parents are gone, Pip goes off chasing a feather...as is the nature of all little ones, and is lost. This is the story of her adventures in her attempt to find her home.

The author has our little lost penguin asking various critters she meets in her search where home is. Each animal tell where there home is, but not Pip's home. The author presents us with some great little rhyming answers with each encounter.

The art work by Jane Chapman is excellent and she captures the personality of the animals along with the wild desolate landscape perfectly. All of the illustrations go perfectly with the story.

This is a great read along book and would certainly be great for a child or parent reader who is into penguins. The story is sweet and mellow and easy to follow.

I am giving this one four stars rather than five as I do not feel the book is of the same quality as previous works. I must say though that this is a good read and that kids do seem to enjoy both looking at the pictures and having the story read to them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful story about a lost little penguin who finds her way home, September 23, 2008

Little Pip is a small baby penguin, one who always listens to her parents when they tell her to stick close and then sing about home. One day though, she chases after a black feather, so lovely against the white snow, and soon finds herself lost and alone. Trying to find her home, she asks a whale and a gull and some huskies how to find home, but none of them can help. Eventually, cold and sad, she sings her song about home to try to feel better and her parents, following the sound of her song, find her and reunite the family.

This book is well written and beautifully illustrated. The penguins are all extremely expressive and the landscape sets the stage perfectly for the story. The rhymes about home capture the attention of younger children and will help older children read along. I lent this book to my mom to read to her kindergarden class and it was extremely popular.

A wonderful book that stresses the importance of home and family and leaves readers with a smile. I hope we see more books about Little Pip in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet Children's Title with Beautiful Hidden Moral, November 20, 2008
This review is from: Where Is Home, Little Pip? (Hardcover)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
At first glance, Where is Home Little Pip is a sweet book your preschooler will love for you to read. It's an endearing tale of growing up small-sized, getting lost, finding adventure, and ultimately finding home again. On the surface, the story told with interspersed verse is worth the purchase of the book. Yet, all classic children's stories ultimately have a moral - hidden or obvious to the reader. This one teaches that everyone (in this case the different Arctic animals) has a home but they do not all look the same. Some day your child will go out into the world and have adventures just like Pip, and on those first excursions away, like Pip they may long for home. All your child has to do is call you (or sing as in Pip's case) and you will be there for them with your love and assurance that "home" isn't a specific place, but where you place your love, i.e., the family being together. Your child will enjoy the story now and hopefully remember the moral in years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Educational, beautiful, and sweet!, September 25, 2008

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
This beautiful book begins with a sweeping landscape in blues, and the art stays lovely throughout. All the pages are sturdy, matte finished lovely full color artwork that kept all four of my elder children (the littlest is only 10 weeks old, eldest is 6 years) captivated.

The story is similar to Are You My Mother? - a classic my children enjoy frequently. Pip learns about a blue whale, sled dogs, and sea gulls as they describe their own homes through poetry. It has a gentle flow about it, and I will expect to read it several times a week for a while!

The moral of the story is that home is wherever your family is, which made even my three year old say, "Awwww. Pip is with her mama!"

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, Especially for Penquin Lovers!, September 25, 2008
This review is from: Where Is Home, Little Pip? (Hardcover)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
This story is delightful. What child wouldn't love to snuggle up with a parent or grandparent and listen to the story of a baby penquin named Little Pip getting lost and finding his way home.

Children will see pictures of animals that live where penquins live: the mighty blue whale, the kelp gull, and the sled dogs. Like Wilson's other books, the animals talk and they tell Little Pip where their homes are

The illustrations, which are an important part of children's books, are just beautiful. I must admit, however, that Bear Snores on is still my favorite Karma Wilson book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great story, subtle illustration, September 24, 2008

This review is from: Where Is Home, Little Pip? (Hardcover)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
The story is well-told and the theme immemorial: Home is where your loved ones are.

Inserting songs into the non-rhyming text is a great idea because it gives the reader a chance to break out in song and really capture our little ones' attention.

My daughter is a little over one so the illustrations were a bit too subtle for her. They're almost monotone and it takes some effort to appreciate the detail and take in the expressions. Figures do move beautifully though, as they do in most of Jane Chapman's work. The gracefullness of the particular angle of an animal's neck that she is able to capture: truly beautiful!

It may take repeated readings for your little ones to engage fully with this book. It is a keeper though for the message it sends!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Illustrations, the story is just OK, September 24, 2008
This review is from: Where Is Home, Little Pip? (Hardcover)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I will start of with the illustrations in this the book. Jane Chapman does an excellent job with the scenery and the various animals in the book.

The storyline has been done many times. A young one gets lost and meets different characters on the way to find home. Pip meets a whale, Kelp Gull, and dogs. Pip's adventure provides some educational value because the various animals describe their home.
Example (Blue Whale lives in the deep ocean with other sea creatures.)

Our 4 year old daughter enjoyed the pictures and was excited when we got to the end of the book, which shows the other books by the author (Bear Wants More)

I rate this 3 1/2 stars because of the illustrations are so well done. I would rate the book lower if I based by review on the story alone.

I would recommend this book for your kids, especially if you are a fan of Wilson and Chapman's other books

I read this book to my grandkids. The pictures are lovely. My youngest was the most interested. She's 4 and was sad when Little Pip got lost. She also knew he should have listened to his parents, when they told him not to wander off. Each animal Pip comes upon has a nice poem about their own homes.
