Simple, Raw Talent. How's that sound?,
By Tony Lombardi "(former mgr, Wintertide Coffee... (Martha's Vineyard) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Where the Humans Eat (Audio CD)
You know. Nobody got Dylan when he first hit the clubs of NY. Unusual voice, different lyrical style, hard hitting ideas. 40 years later he's a legend. Well check this out. Willy Mason is a true talent in the most artistic of ways. This CD reflects him so well in many ways. Lyrically, Willy confronts issues of youth. (He himself recently graduated from high school on Martha's Vineyard.) To hear idealism in this day and age is refreshing too. Not idealism in the obvious way but in the real way. Take the song "Oxygen". Although he points to many issues that younger folk confront such as the power of television, ADD, the drugging of our young people. "on and on and on it goes. The world it just keeps spinning." In spite of all that is faced, the singer wants to be better than all that; wants to strive in spite of the pressures. Wants to be better. You're sitting in the kitchen; Willy with guitar, maybe his bro Sam on drums. A very personal style, intimate and right there in your parlor. The production is sparse and raw. No undue sounds or orchestrations. Everything belongs and is uneffected and pure. Willy is a person writing from deep places in a new young voice, with the appropriate edge. You should invite this CD into your home. You and your kids will love it.

Brought a tear to my eye.,
By Jason Claxton "Jay" (manchester) - See all my reviews

I purchased this CD not expecting much. I had only heard 'oxygen' and thought that this song alone is worth buying the album for. After listening to the first couple of songs a realised what i was in for. It is lyrically genius and so bittersweet it will bring a tear to your eye and send shivers down your spine. Although in some parts your head will be nodding away without you realising. 'Were the humans eat', lies between Bob Dylan and the Black Keys musically ... only better. Willy Mason's debut album 'Where the humans eat' is a must buy for every music lovers house hold. It will lyrically blow you away and make you conamplate life once or twice.

I went to high school with Willy. Now that would make you think that I'm biased in my view of him, but if you look above there are only 4 stars. I have been listening to Willy and his family make music forever, and for the longest time, I wasn't that impressed with him.
This album made me a fan of a friend. His maturity shines through this album. It's raw, it's beautiful and most of all, it's truthful. I find truth has gotten quite lost lately in music. And this album helps to bring it back. If you don't own this CD, you're missing out. This young man has something to say, and it's something we all need to hear.

Album of great political importance,
By Nick Fulton (Wellington, New Zealand) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Where the Humans Eat (Audio CD)
Where has this guy been hiding? Why are there not more musicians making music like this? Willy Mason is a modern day singer songwriter who has rediscovered what music should be about. His folk rock songs bring meaning and purpose back to music that has been missing for far too long. For a nineteen year old, the message he spreads shows his maturity and awareness about the real issues that face our planet in the twenty first century.
It's hard to pin point an area on this album that is better than another. The opening track sets the tone for the album, immediately striking you and making you go WOW! Quickly you realise that Willy Mason is a name that you want to tell all your left wing friends. His pessimistic view towards globalisation and celebrity role-models are expressed in such a convincing way that even your right wing friends might be swayed. The two standout tracks that need individual attention are `Our Town', an anti-war song about corruption and dishonesty and `Oxygen', about the problems our children face growing up in the technological age. Both speak about issues that our so-called music icons fail miserably in addressing. Willy Mason is attempting to do what Bob Dylan and others did in the sixties. If you believe that protest songs are important in providing an alternative political message then you will certainly like this album.

My friend offered me this album to borrow...To be honest i didnt want it, i just accepted to be polite. But this album completely blew me away.
Each track rolls so smoothly onto the next, taking you through a real journey of emotions, from the tear-jearking 'where the humans eat', to the up lifting 'so long' I found myself sitting on buses singing along without even realising and smiling at people i didnt even know, bidding them good day. Although this album deals with alot of sad issues (ADD, tevelvision and capitolism) it cant help but make you feel up lifted about yourself, a true natural high. I recommend you buy this album and make this guy the next bob dylan

It's Not That He's Trying To Accomplish What Dylan Did,

I don't think Willy really cares. He's just who he is. Doing what he must. Exhale.
Granted, he's the only kid I've heard worthy to take on Dylan's mantle... as Dylan did Woody's. And, as the opener for Beth Orton, the crowd didn't appreciate him... just as Dylan first starting out.

I remember sitting in my friend's car, driving back home from Dylan, and he had this record playing. I immediately fell in love with this new artist. I later found out it was Willy Mason. He's a familiar voice to me, and speaks to me in such a way that makes me want to keep listening over and over. Just get the record, honestly, you won't regret it.

May i plead you reading this to not buy this album. I must confess that i have lied in my rating and my title for this review. It is a clever ploy to make u not want to buy this record. Why? i hear you cry? well the story goes...
Please don't buy this record as i want to keep it to myself like an old secret only i know about. No one i know has heard of Willy Mason and it makes me feel all buttery inside knowing this and knowing he is all mine to keep and this record is my little secret bundle of joy. Everytime i hear his 'is that a guitar or a machine gun' on Our Town i crack a secret smile no one else understands. Please if you MUST buy this record do try and keep it secret and never let it leave your tight grasp. I love you Mr. Mason. Monsieur Mason , je t'adore! plese be mine forever and ever. I love you all |
