Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Wormell is a master of the linoleum block print. His well-defined pictures of animals capture and hold viewers' attention. However, as concept books, the assembled series of images have some problems. The difficulties are most apparent in What I Eat. Some foods shown are those that are eaten in the wild: seals are paired with fish and elephants with leaves. However, a wasp is shown opposite a jelly jar, and a duck's food is bread. Even more curious is the fact that a dog is pictured on the cover, but not inside. Similarly, readers never learn where the mouse on the cover of Where I Live resides. In addition, there are large discrepancies in the size relationships. Viewers cannot get an accurate sense of the size of a crab, for example, as it appears to be larger than the tide pool opposite it. Marginal purchases.

5.0 out of 5 stars Never too young for beauty; this book is our baby's pick., February 9, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Where I Live (Hardcover)
We introduced our son to this handsome book when he was just six month's old because we enjoyed looking at the simple, colorful linocuts and were weary of the usual board books. Almost a year later, this book is still his favorite and we haven't tired of it. Our son has learned sounds for most the animals, including the challenging ones such as the crab (he pretends to whine) and the camel (nh, nh, nh, nh). The hippo alone remains silent in its splendidly-tinted lake. Books likes this one are the perks of parenthood.
