Review of "Verchuosity" "From Where I Stand" and "Take Me Back",

This review is from: From Where I Stand (Audio CD)
April Verch is an up and coming artist in Canadian Folk Music and Fiddling. She comes from Canada's Ottawa Valley which has a rich heritage in music from its Irish, Scottish, and French roots. She is capable of imitating many Canadian fiddling styles such as Cape Breton, French, Metis along with her native tradition from the Valley. She has inherited not only music from Graham and Eleanor (Moorehead) Townsend--best Canadian fiddlers of the last generation--but ina way also their mantle in her music. I bought "Verchuosity," "From Where I Stand," and "Take Me Back" at the same time. The first is almost entirely instrumental and fiddling, the last two have fiddling as well as songs done by her band with her singing. She excels at everything she does. The roots of this music are similar to the roots of some of the music from the Appalachian Mts in the US that gave birth to bluegrass and traditional country. Her music is thoughtful as well as vivacious and covers a wide variety of folk traditions. I would put her on a par with Natalie McMaster and Donnell Leahy. Often I buy a CD and end up really enjoying only one, two, or three songs. 90% of all three CDs have songs I will play over and over. |
