Trav McGee has a doppelganger., November 30, 2008
This review is from: Where is Janice Gantry? (Mass Market Paperback)
Where is Janet Gantry? was originally published about 3 years before the first Travis McGee novel ever saw the light of day. Its protagonist and first person narrator, Sam Brice, bears an uncanny resemblance to the better known McGee.
This is a skillfully crafted book which is part crime novel, part action-adventure and part romance. Written with a brand of prose notable for its evocative descriptions, Where is Janet Gantry? tells a compelling story that succeeds in holding the reader's interest from beginning to end. Set among the keys of Florida's southern gulfcoast, this is a tale of horrendous criminality made that much more objectionable because of the idyllic locale in which it takes place.
John D. MacDonald fans who have enjoyed Travis McGee will definitely want to meet Sam Brice. The two are literary clones who happen to live on opposite sides of the Florida peninsula.
Where is Janet Gantry? is a 4 star effort. Recommended to readers who appreciate artful writing, like their crime hardboiled and don't object to some romance along the way.

Strong MacDonald mystery, December 7, 2009
This review is from: Where is Janice Gantry? (Mass Market Paperback)
Fans of John D. shouldn't miss this one. It has an atmospheric Florida coastline setting, a strong mystery, and several memorable scenes and characters. This is one of my favorites of his non-McGee novels, along with "A Man of Affairs", "Please Write for Details", "The Crossroads", and "The Damned".
