5.0 out of 5 stars Beginning of the Story August 24, 2007
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book starts the story of the relationship of Jessica Dubois to Sarah Montgomery and Emmie Croftner. This is Sarah's story, with Jessica playing a side role. Plains of Promise is Emmie's story, and Jessica's full story is told in The Heart Answers. These are inspirational and historical books, set in the Indian Wars period. The historical facts are much appreciated, and the gospel is clearly presented in all three stories. I love this author's romantic suspense novels, and now I have found that I enjoy her historical romance as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars A sweet story December 10, 2004
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This is difficult to review because it depends on what you're looking for. If you want a good Christian book, this is a 5. If you want a good book but spicier then this is a 3.....so I gave it 4*....Sarah believes Fiance Rand died in the civil war and so deciding that no one else will matter, she agrees to marry Ben. Ben, however, knows Rand is alive! Fortunately Rand gets home the day before sarah's wedding. He's upset that she didn't wait for him and leaves to head westward with the cavalry. Sarah gets on a stage and follows him but he is engaged to another when she gets there.Ben, who is determined to have Sarah andis disgraced with the community realizes he duped them all by lying about rand's death follows sarah and Rand west to get even with them. Rand stopped talking to God during the horrors of the war and sarah lost her intimacy with God when Rand was killed. So amidst all their problems and all of Bens evil deeds, these 2 eventually have to turn back to God to find thier way. It is a wonderful, sweet story. Well written, great characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Where Leads the Heart (Wyoming #1) November 3, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is the first book in a collection called Wyoming written by Colleen Coble. Previously out of print, it is now available digitally.

Sarah is mourning the loss of her childhood love, Rand. He has been killed in the Civil War and it seems like most everyone around her wants her to move on. She is getting a lot of pressure from her family to marry a prominent man in town. Sarah has decided to cave in to their wishes. She will never love anyone the way she loved Rand, so she figures it matters little that she will never be happy with Ben.

Rand has been thought dead everyone who loves him. His letters didn't seem to reach the family, so everyone is amazed when he shows up on their doorstep. Ben was supposed to tell Rand's family that he was recovering and he did not. Ben also has involved his brother, who works at the post office, to intercept Rand's letters home. Rand's shock turns to a feeling of betrayal when he hears about Sarah's impending marriage. He ends up heading west to escape.

Sarah is crushed. She wants to be with Rand, but her father is ailing and she feels unable to leave him, even for the man she loves. Rand sees it as further evidence that Sarah doesn't love him as much as he thought and when her father dies, Sarah decides that she has to follow Rand west. She has to prove her love to him, but is she too late?

I loved this book. The characters were well written. The story continues in Plains of Promise. It is the story of Isaac, a minor character in this book.

I thought the story was well written and the plot unexpected, but good. Is there a sequel and if so, what is the title.

Another good story by Colleen Coble. Interesting characters in the post Civil War west. A somewhat predictable plot line. Nevertheless an enjoyable summer read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Where Leads the Heart May 23, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Sarah was devastated by Rand's death, but to please her father and brother, she agreed to marry Ben, only to have Rand show up very much alive just hours before she was to wed another man. I really felt bad for Rand in the beginning, coming back from war to find your fiancée engaged to another man has got to be rough, but his stubborn, callous behavior quickly ran any sympathy I had for him into the ground, and he was a very hard man to like for most of this story. He was blind to Sarah's obvious devotion, and turned around and unfeelingly stabbed her in the back with Jessica when he had the first chance. Sarah was the sweet, unending martyr, which I don't mind as long as it is amply repaid in the end with a happily ever after. I almost wished Sarah had ended up with Isaac, but once Rand came back to himself I was content. There was a lot of references to God, religion and "being saved" (which I'm not all that big on), but the tribulations Rand and Sarah went through, and the part the Indians played in their story, came together so nicely to show such real growth of character (particularly in Rand) that it was really enjoyable. I look forward to reading Isaac's story next in Plains of Promise.

3.0 out of 5 stars just ok
It's not as good as her other books. I was somewhat disappointed in how the story flowed. Some of the story line was far too far fetched.
