This is a very short heartwarming story about the importance of charity and simple kindness, particularly to the less fortunate among us. It takes very little of your time to read, and it is well worth the few moments' investment. I think that it would warm the heart even of pre-visitation Ebenezer.

While the story is based upon or inspired by The Gospel of St. Matthew, Chapter 25, I recommend it to people of all faiths and even to those who reject a supernatural being, for it is a lesson in common decency and the moral is for all.

Although I've read this account in The Bible many times, I enjoyed very much the way Tolstoy's story practically illustrates its message. Since we are made in the image of God, and since The Bible says, "God is love," (1 John 4:8) it is reasonable that he wants us to act like he acts. Our actions make him more real to us and, in turn, bring him closer to us.

This story may be short but it is worth reading and is very uplifting.

We are always expecting big things and surprises to make us notice things. But most of the time is the most simple things that make a difference. A smile could change someone's mood for the day. We need to see others as ourselves, in different situations. We are all so close to having something horrible to happen to us or a live one. Don't think so much of yourself!!

It shows the power of the love of Christ touching lives through everyday kindness shown to the people in front of us. Tolstoy brings that alive beginning with the cobbler`s discouragement and skepticism with life and faith and ending with a message of simple hope. Tolstoy`s story is a wonderful read aloud to children. My mother introduced my siblings and me to Tolsoy with this short story and many others by him. This story, however, is my favorite.

It is like reading a new version of the bible. The story matches the Christian cannon by the letter. Very well constructed as Tolstoy always does construct his stories.

This is a beautifully written story which would be especially meaningful for anyone seeking an understanding of how a person might encounter the Christ in the midst of everyday life. Touching on Matthew 25 (Just as you did it to one of the least of these...you did it to me.), Tolstoy uses a day in the life of Martin the cobbler to illustrate how acts of kindness to neighbors or strangers can be understood as serving Christ himself.

A beautiful picture of how Jesus Christ works through us to lift our hearts towards His higher calling to love Him and our fellow man. Simple and poignant reminder to help those in need. Inspired!
